: Hurricane SANDY, the east coast, and chain saws

Wind/drizzle began here at about 0900 - gusty 20-25 mph NNE. Blowing leaves everywhere. The latest NWS storm track takes the eye in at about Atlantic City, storm moves west toward Philadelphia, turn northerly toward NY.

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201218.html

Just squeezed the truck full and filled a 6.5 gallon jerry jug with 87 - gonna need it for chain saws and blowers after this is over.

Fully anticipating major power loss and tree damage. Have bourbon, will travel. Happy Hallowe'en.

Best of luck to you Sub and to all the upper east coast members. Let's hope the predictions of gloom and doom are a bit of media hype. From what we are hearing here this is really going to be a bad one for you guys.
Stay safe all and keep us posted as you can.

All battened down here! Prepared for a week long siege without power, have food, water, Sterno for me and the dogs.

Unfortunately my wife is in N.J. due to a family emergency, and likely to be in the way of the worst of it. Fortunately she is inland and on fairly high ground (for NJ). Both her brother and sister have homes in Cape May so we are hoping they make it through with relatively light damage. Cape May has already been declared an emergency evacuation area, so everyone is gathered together at the folks place.

After Irene, last year, we took a good look at the trees on our property and took down those that were either dead, sick or a threat to the house ..... so we are hoping for the best. Our home is located in an area with underground electrical, so up till now, over the past 7 years, we have not lost power during these storms, but there is always a first time!

Mid and SW Virginia should get by with rain, rain, rain and not too much wind. We're now forecast for 8" - 10" of rain (in < 24 hours) and steady wind tomorrow and tomorrow evening at 50 mph with gusts to 70+. Beginning NE and backing to N and NW. Right now it's spitty, breezy, cool.

Delaware, Cape May, Atlantic City are in for a bad 2 days. (as if we're not ................) This storm is over 500 miles in diameter and we're 50 miles SW of the projected track of the eye............ain't gonna dodge this one.

I'll move my grill and barrels inside. Just have to keep the garage doors unhitched from the motor so I can manually lift them if I lose power.

But this should be nothing up here...

Rain stopped a few hours ago, but the wind is still gusty here. Western NC is going to have blizzard like conditions on Tues. and Wed. Rain will be back here on Tuesday. Some minor flooding here but nothing too bad. Outer Banks got flooded out, but that's nothing unusual.

A trucking friend on FB just posted a pic from the coast. 4 trucks were blown on their sides in a perfectly straight line. Oy. Thankfully we are only expecting 50 mph. I've been thru worse. But not while empty. And I'll be empty for 3 hrs of my day every day this week.. Could be fun. Lol.

Worst I ever actually drove thru was a tropical storm off the gulf coast in TX. 85 mph straight line winds and I kept driving. Lol. Was hearing on the CB bout trucks all around me blowing over but I drove right thru. Lol.

Crazy? Possibly. But it was a hell of a ride! Lol

Sitting on the southern shore of Long Island, I am definitely feeling the effects of this storm already. They are calling for squalls between the hours of 1-6pm this afternoon with winds almost touching 40mph on average, 60+mph gusts. There will be heavy rain throughout as well. There's almost a guarantee that a tree or 12 will fall sometime before this is over within a 5 mile radius. Water levels are extremely high and the wind is very audible.

And all this is nothing compared to what's gonna happen in Jersey...ugh.

Submariner409
10-29-12, 09:32 AM
Right now it's blowing 25 - 30 from the NNE, intermittent heavy rain. As of 0700 we had 2" inches in the rain gauges. LOTS more on the way - 7". Wind to 55 mph late this afternoon. Thankfully from the north - less large trees to sweat. One power hiccup at 0400, but so far, so good. Guaranteed - we WILL lose power for some period of time. Got plenty of water stored, extra ice in the chest freezer and refrigerator top freezer, 2 quarts of coffee in the Thermos and the small propane stove is ready to go. Karen is making a pot of chili.

10-29-12, 02:08 PM
Lights flickering heavy wind and rain, Town trucks driving around. Bands of heavy rain containing strong gusty winds at times. High 59F. Winds NNE at 35 to 50 mph. 1 to 2 inches of rain expected. Winds could occasionally gust over 70 mph.

If you're of a mind, do some Google work. If I Google "delmarva power outage map" I get a map with areas highlighted in colors from green to red. Hovering over a specific zip code gives the number of customers currently without power.

Try it with the name/acronym for your local power service provider.

.......... local volunteer fire siren just sounded 2 groups of 4 calls - Two Alarm problem.

I'm right on the lake 15 minutes east of Cleveland. The winds are very strong at times, and my apartment complex already has 2 down trees. It is amazing to see the electrical show in the sky from all of the transformers blowing. I'm on the fifth floor (top) of my building. It is going to be a long night. the waves have been as high as 15-20 feet already.

I'm in Warren Ohio now. Been windy as hell. Been fun in the semi. Lol. Was empty going from Cleveland to Columbus so the wind really played with my truck. And to top it off, for bout 30 miles between Cleveland and Columbus, it was snowing like a SOB. I 71 was already coated in snow. Not fun in an empty semi with 40+ mph cross winds. But so far so good. Just gotta make one more round. Be leaving Warren here soon for cbus again

Finally passed out at 0100 this morning. Long, noisy, windy night. The entire yard/property/woods looks like a giant green salad - leaves and small limbs everywhere. We, personally, dodged a BIG bullet because the house is totally surrounded by BIG oak and pine trees but only small limbs down. Had a few power hiccups - we have power but a significant part of the island is without power right now; DelMarVa Power is good - they'll get it all back in a day or so. I told basscatt that we had raked and blown everything from our drainage swails and ditches - we live on a relatively low, level, poorly drained section of the island, so drainage needs all the help it can get - the sump pump in the crawl space is cycling every minute and the front yard is 3" deep. The main ditch - running east to a farm field - is literally a small river. I'll go out shortly to check the 12" culvert under our gravel road. 3 leaves and a twig can dam that up in a second. Easily a week of cleanup ahead.........

Hope all the folks in the northeast made out OK - the pictures of NJ and NY are scary. It snowed in west/central MD, too. truckinman is too modest - cold weather conditions west of DC were/are flat horrible.

Here in Richmond we were lucky, unlike during last year's Irene, we suffered no damage to our property and really only took a mild hit from Sandy. I have just heard that my wife and her family came through New Jersey's trials with the storm in good shape. Apparently even the houses in Cape May made it through in one piece, according neighbors reports. So I quess we can thank our lucky stars that we made it through this year's "storm of the century" in tact and in good shape!

When confronted with an approaching disaster be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a couple of weeks. FEMA and all that crap is great as far as it goes but you are bound to be way down on their action list. Drag out the campstove and lantern. Make sure you have fuel. Fill the bathtub. A big sack of beans and a slab of bacon will keep you going for a long time. God helps those who help themselves.`
