: Tinted Windows - Opinion?

I am very tempted to tint my windows a fairly dark shade (likely 15-20%) and I think it would look absolutely great with the top up, but I am apprehensive because I think it would look odd with the top down and the windows up. I was just wondering if you guys had an opinion on this... I'd like to do it, but I just haven't been able to make the decision because of that. :suspect:

This stuff:
http://www.huperoptikusa.com/

It blocks out heat and light without making it hard to see out the windows at night.

That there is intriguing. Wonder how dark it comes... I don't want people being able to see inside my car. Like, at all. I was planning on double layering 20% on my side windows, but this might be better.

I wish I knew what kind of tint was on my silver Seville... so I could tell people to avoid it. Checking my blind spot at night was a bit risky. It did keep the interior very, very cool, but so would duct tape.

The whole seeing at night thing isn't a huge deal for me. My DeVille was rocking 10% tint and I was fine with it at night. I very much like the dark look of it. The big thing pushing me away from the Huperoptik stuff is the price. I've got a shop in Crackima that gives me a great price. If I pay cash, if you know what I mean. I'm just not sure that it wouldn't look odd with the top down and tinted windows up.

Would look fine. FL, the Sebring capital of the world, has many that look like this.

Our new T Bird came with tinted windows.
At first, I was going to remove it because I hate losing any night vision.
I may keep it ... the look with the top is is great, and I rarely drive the car with the top down and
windows up.

Get 2% for the cargo area and 2nd row...problem solved.

5% tint is so expensive it's actually more cost-effective to double layer 20%.

I have 5% tint on the back windows of my Town Car. 35% on the front windows. It's new ceramic tint and it cost me just over $300 to have done.

Thats roughly what my dad paid when he got his olds wagon tinted with 2% (but this was a few years ago).

And if you tint it youtself, its even cheaper.

Ceramic tint?

Yes, and it has very noticeable improvement in solar reflection...

The shop down in Crackima I use will apply any shade for the entire car for $140 (so long as you pay cash)... They're the ones who did my DeVille. They did a good job, too. Not so sure I want to spend too much time in that neighborhood, though...

LOL Yeah there's a shop like that up here in Jacksonville. $150 for a car, $200 for an SUV (or me). Looking at doing it later this month when school check hits.

Personally, it depends on the car. My Cadillac for example, like any Fullsize Caddy from that era, looks absolutely ridiculous with tints.

I see Sebrings with tinted windows all the time. Like most modern cars, it does not take away from the look at all (IMO) so if you want it, go for it.

I know several people with Ceramic tints and they all swear by it. It also definitely keeps the interior a good bit cooler.

You should submit that as an entry for Jay Leno's "White Trash Repairs" Gallery. Check it out @ http://www.nbc.com/the-tonight-show/photos/white-trash-repairs-april-13-2011/7424#item=168197

^^^ You did? And did it help keep the martians and other space creatures from invading your cargo area?
If not try tin foil next time!

Actually, if the duct tape done temporarily, then it was a MacGyver Fix. If it was the solution to the problem then......

I've tinted the windows on every car I've owned except my Celica and Cruella, which had the EZ Kool glass that didn't need it. Even Betty's windows are tinted, but I worked with the tint shop to find something that would look stock but still deliver the benefits.

I always go with a light tint so I can see out at night and my concern is for UV block and heat rejection.

Keep in mind that in most states no tint at all is allowed to the windshield except far a stripe across the top and no darker than 70% on the side windows which is the level of most factory tint.

No complaints please when the authorities pull you over.

Stingroo

Most states will allow you to go darker than 70%. Also most states will allow you to have windshield tint with a medical exemption.

20% all around on my STS. $130 installed. IMO get the tint in a % of your choice. You will notice the difference in the summer.

I do 5 on the rear and 15 on the front and love it!!! With a large windshield, enough light comes in so it doesn't look too dark. Ive never been hassled by the cops either.

That's the reason I'm doing it is for summer it gets so hot in a black car...

Yeah, Cadi509, the shop I go to is Advanced Auto Sound which is kind of a kitty corner from the Sonic on 1st, on Ranch Rite Rd. If I do it, I'm most likely going 15% or 20%. I'm going to be buying an aftermarket keyless entry unit too, since mine completely died on me.

I feel your pain... Sitting still in a convertible with the sun bearing down on you in a black interior with black leather, 100* out, not very pleasant.

Are you sure it isn't just the remote? Most remotes the battery holder is only attached to the circuit board with two solders. After years of dropping on the ground, tossing on tables, and battery changes those solders can break. Often people buy expensive replacements when two minutes with a solder iron would fix it. Even if you have to pay for it, it is only $5-$10 at local computer repair shops.

I wouldn't tint the windows on a convertible. When I had a convertible the top was down about 3/4 of the time I drove it.

I did have 20% tint on my 95 Fleetwood, looked great but wasn't so dark to where the cops will hassle you. Its when you get that 5% limo tint where they can't see in at all they'll write you a ticket. Also kept the car A LOT cooler in the summer, lots of glass in that car.
