When is the check oil level light supposed to come on in the vehicle. I know that it has a sensor for oil level, when should it come on?

It comes on just about the time the connecting rods let go.

:yeah:

How do you figure there is an oil level sensor? If you are thinking the OLM has a level sensor, you are sorely wrong. OLM stands for Oil Life Monitor.

My 2001 Seville had one, came on at about 2 qts. low if I remember correctly.

Not sure if the STS has one. I'm almost 2k into my oil change and haven't used a drop.

Koz is right; one of the few oversights in this car.

So no oil LEVEL sensor in the N*? I know the 3.6 doesn't have one...

There is an oil level sensor...it's called a dipstick.

Which I believe the manual suggests you check at every fillup:thumbsup::thumbsup:

V8 northstar engines have a level sensor ... V6 engines do not

It ain't that great then. I got used to not having to check as previous northstars went off when a qrt low. My STS4 was 3 qrts low yesterday and no light.

I'll admit, I don't check weekly, but rather about every 3K miles, because the N* uses about half a quart of M1 goodness over the OLM's 100% life.

OLM gives me 'bout 12K-13K miles. I'm quite happy with this, because I've used "extended" oil change intervals while using Mobil 1, since around 1992.

No, I'm simply agreeing with Koz that Cadillac erred by setting the N* low oil warning far too low.

I am surprised to learn they neglected to include even a poor sensor in the V6 models, since they need it even more.

I've gone about 6k miles on this oil change. OLM shows 65% checked dipstick and doesn't appear to be using any still at about 3/4 - 7/8 on the dipstick. This is 08 N*. My 02 N* was at 1qt per 1500-2k miles.

I've seen reports that at least early CTSs with a 3.6L V6 have an oil level sensor but it only triggers if the oil level is low at startup. If it knocks a hole in the pan while driving you're SOL.

Not too little but too late (for some); GM has added oil level sensors to the 2013 3.6L and 3.0L engines.
