I read some of the messages posted concerning brake pads and rotors. My Cad dealer said that my brakes are 3/32 above the rivit head and that they will need replaced within a year. Our state inspections are once a year. Based on the messages on the forum, should I just let the Cad garage do the work? They want a little over $350.00 to turn the front rotors and put on new pads. I used to work on car in my dad's garage during the 60's -early 80's. I never worked on ABS systems or with brakes that have sensors???? I don't want to end up with sensors lights (if my car is equiped with them) being on after the brake job is done. I don't want to hear squeeking and grinding either. And of course I hope that the replacements will eliminate the pulsing I feel when I brake. (rotor warp?) Just looking for recommendations from those of you who went through what I am about to experience. Thanks very much for any help.

If you've changed front pads and rotors before, there's nothing to it. I just did mine and had no problems at all. If you buy the GM pads, the sensors come with them. If not, you'll have to pick the sensors up at the GM dealer if they're worn. When the pads go, it'll pop up on the display that you have to change them.

Is the sensor actually an electrical sensor or is it the piece of metal that is made to squeek when the pads get wore out? Sounds like buying any type of replacement pads may not be a good idea because they probably won't have the sensor, right? Sorry about my ignorance with this sensor concept. I just want to make sure that I'm going about this right before I get started. Again, thanks for your reply, it is appreciated.

The sensor is electronic and it snaps into a little valley on the pads. When the pads wear enough, it makes contact with the rotor and sends a message up to the readout on the dash to tell you to change the brake pads. The aftermarket companies sell the pads, but you'll still have to get the sensors from the dealer. The original GM pads come with the sensors.
