I have just purchased an '06 sts and there is a rattle at idle that sounds like the water pump but there is no play in the pulley when i checked it with out the belt in place, could it be a more serious issue? does anyone have any ideas before I replace the water pump in an effort to resolve this issue

If its the V6 it's probably the timing chains

That's exactly what I was going to say...OP, have you checked your oil level lately?

Harley you'll probably see no oil on the dipstick when you check it...I had the same thing going on with mine

And if that's the case be prepared for many hours of DIY if you're capable or some serious dollars being thrown at a well qualified mechanic/dealer

I just topped my oil off and the "rattle" was gone curtc

I'm not saying it is guaranteed to happen, just be prepared...low oil will definitely make it rattle and will do serious damage if not looked after closely, any 3.6 owner should check their oil regularily. If yours doesn't consume oil then great, you're one of the lucky ones, but if it does running it low can cause damage as the VVT system relies on oil pressure to operate the timing correctly, so always keep it full. Same with the N*, except the N* actually has a PCV system that functions so oil consumption doesn't appear to as big of a problem.

Yup that definitely scared me into regular oil checks after I went through that
