so my 09 caddy cts 4 check engine light appeared about 2 days ago... i bearly bought it around a week ago so i went straight to the the car lot where i bought it from. the manager of the car lot said "not a problem we will get out mechanics and check why the check engine light is on. i receive a call today and she says its the timing belt, its skipping gears. she says they are going to replace it at no cost to me. my question is how long does it take to fix this issue and how much would have it cost to me to fix it as well. Thank u
First, there are no timing belts. There are timing chains - three of them. This is a well known issue on 2008 and 2009 models. I had it done as well. It took dealer less than six hours - apparently they have a lot of practice
BTW, I do not believe the chain actually "skipped". Most likely it just stretched beyond allowable limit!
Their mechanic probably isn't familiar with these engines. Probably not a good sign, but I wouldn't worry about it. Read up on it here on this forum. Lots of info with the search feature at your fingertips.
Your HFV6 timing chain warranty was recently extended to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.
GM/Cadillac letter to affected vehicle owners says...
What You Should Do: If you believe that your vehicle's Service Engine Soon light has illuminated due to timing chain wear, repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverarage must be performed by a Cadillac dealer. You may want to contact your Cadillac dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.
As far as I know, mfr's original warranty and this special extended timing chain coverage transfers with the vehicle - unless warranty is voided by reason of vehicle neglect, abuse, salvage title, etc.
I have a '09 CTS non-DI 3.6L and did not receive the letter yet concerning the extended coverage of the timing chain. Should I be expecting one or does it only apply to DI engines?
I am not sure. But Katie from Cadillac Customer Service should be able to answer this question. Also if you PM her your VIN number she can check it for you.
Jacobchav08, I'd definitely be able to check if the timing chain coverage applies to your specific Cadillac. Please send me an email at Katie_Lucille@gmexpert.com with the last eight of your VIN when you get a chance, and I can explore for you!
Thank u Katie when I get off at work I'll do that ASAP !!
