: Does your car or truck have a Name/Title?

Or are only the crazies still doing this?

I think I fit all the categories.

The Expedition, is always just called "The Ford"

The Triumph is "The bike"

The Chevelle is "The Chevelle" or "Dad's Car"

The GTO has been various things...but never a name, more just a description, my favourite recent one being "That black thing" from when someone local asked what it was.

The Mark IV has somehow become known as "Big Blue" but that title caught on long before I had ever heard it used, so I am not sure of the circumstances.

The Mack is "Blockbuster" and is named after a song, actually.

And my Cadillac is "Branwen" because she is easily the best of them all and deserves a name.

I know I am not the only one (The Roo Wagon, Sabrina, etc) so who else does?

No exciting or weird names here:

1995 Cadillac - "the Cadillac"
2007 Jaguar XJ8 - "the Cat"
2001 Chrysler T&C - "the van"
1957 Mercury - "The Mercury" or "that old car" (my wife's name for it)

83 lesabre- "the pimpmobile" (due to it being burgundy inside and out)
86 cadillac "the crapillac" or "lawn ornament" (it looks alot better in pics than up close, and it actually left a 30 foot long dead spot in my yard) my dad also calls it "the shagillac" occasionally, which is funny since it has no back seat
My dads 99 E350SD 7.3TD- "the beast" "the work van" "the truck" "need salt? we deliver!" (Due to leftover pinstriping on the back of the rear doors)
00 safari "the shagfari" (yes ray...it actually caught on), "the little van" (when compared to the e350, its not that big, because the e350 is monstrous)
87 silverado (caddy motor donor)- "the beast", "that crappy truck"

Somehow I have always had names for our cars. But only for those I really liked and were sort of members of the family. Here are some from the ancient past:

My Dad's 1960 Cadillac Fleetwood after he had it painted white - "Moby Dick"

My bright red 1958 Jaguar XK 150 drophead - "Roccinante"

My amaranto (dark red) 1964 Lamborghini 350 GT - "Passionella von Climax" (Posh for short)

Our 1972 British Racing green XJ6 - "Sheamus Mac Manus"

Our 1975 white with dark green landau roof Chrysler Cordoba - "Mrs Simpson" (Wallace for short)

Our 1975 "Phoenician Ivory" Cadillac Seville - "Samantha" also "Sammy Seville"

Our white 1978 Dodge Diplomat wagon - "Dudley Do Right"

My wife's espresso brown 1980 Peugeot 505S - "Yves"

Our bright red 1983 VW Scirocco Wolfsburg ED. - "Pocket Panzer"

My pewter gray 1995 Seville STS - "Gray Wolf"

There were many other cars, but none of them elicited a name except to the 1984 Audi 5000S which became known as "That Damn Audi!"

Our 1975 white with dark green landau roof Chrysler Cordoba - "Mrs Simpson" (Wallace for short)Clever. But didn't "that woman" as she was derisively referred to by the Queen Mum spell it Wallis?

All of my cars have had names, as have my sisters' and parents' cars. I think one of the most fitting was Frumpy Fred, the name I bestowed on my Dad's '62 Ford Falcon, which being an image-conscious teenager I was embarrassed to be seen in. I thought it was the dorkiest car on earth.

I have an associate who drives a small Ford pickup (Whatever they call their small pickup) and named it "Fred" and feels very similarly about his Ford as you did to yours. He specifically named it Fred, because "It uses Flintstone Technology" (I.E. has power nothing) and says it is because of the car's obvious age (It is like...a 2007, I think) to which I reply that he should see mine, as they are all so much older. Sadly, he can only imagine, as he has heard many legends about the lot, but lives on the wrong side of the country, so has never seen them in person...until Craig's California Cadillac meet, 2014.

Sting needs a hot pink wagon with a drop kit, oversized wheels, shag carpet, custom pink/purple interior and those little frills on the trim around the headliner, with a bed in the back. "THE SHAGGIN' WAGON".

Do it, Sting. Do it. Also, Kevin forgot "Hooptylac" the only one I have ever heard.

I did forget hooptielac, which is odd considering thats what I call it most of the time.

My dad used to have a 77 pontiac catalina safari that was dubbed frankenstein. It was gold with red pinstripes (had been repainted twice at maaco-but the factory maroon paint and first re-paint were still visible where emblems and trim had fallen off), had a set of progressive 15x8 aluminum rims that had a 3 tooth sawblade design, a sheepskin headliner, 10 speakers (including 2 trashed woofers from home speakers in the sides of the cargo bed), of which only the 2 original dash speakers worked, 2 sets of JC whitney add on turn signals (front fender ones were blue and small, rears were orange rockets on the quarters,) dual CB whip antennas, an ill fitting buick taillight, a chevy caprice headlight bezel that was too large to fit, and a crappy anemic 301 V8 that blew up with 250 or 300k on it. I remember when my dad first brought it home, it had a set of towing mirrors on it, until he slammed the drivers door and the drivers side mirror fell off the car and broke. He also threw all the added in speakers in the trash, along with the panels from the cargo bay, the quarter panel JC Whitney turn signals, whip antennas, the rear carpet, and a bag of birdseed that was under the front seat.

Sounds like your dad cleaned that baby up pretty good!

Yeah...and it still looked like crap, except for the cargo area, because he got a set of nice burgundy panels from a parisienne. That car was great though, because it was such a beater. It did leave him stranded several times though (including the time 6 freeze plugs blew out of the motor while doing 85+ in the middle of nowhere and it lost all the coolant...thankfully a guy in a bronco II was nice enough to stop and give us a ride back to STL...he said he saw the steam rolling down the sides of the car and figured it wasn't going to make it much farther. My dad replaced the freeze plugs and got another year of abuse out of it before the engine finally threw a rod)

I'd definitely recommend that car to anyone. It was one durable car! It needed very little in terms of maintenance or upkeep aside from scheduled maintenance and I had it for about 40k miles and it never, ever left me stranded. It was so reliable it was almost.....boring.

They are pretty much the same car, except the GS of course has the supercharger and a stronger transmission as well.

orconn
06-27-12, 09:41 AM
The GS has the firmer better handling suspension also. There were also LS's that came with GS "Touring " suspension and trim. My wife had one and it was a very satisfactory car. Only real complaint was the cupholder in the center front armrest which broke repeatedly. Ours was a 1997 I don't know if they ever fixed the armrest problem or like so defective GM designs and GM parts just let it go till the end of the model run!

89 Brougham (sold) -- Cadillac Pimpn due to te white exterior & red leather interior

Haven't really named any of my cars per se:

1991 Regal sedan- The Beagle Regal we called it in high school.
1990 Seville STS- I called it ugly, sold it after 3 months of ownership.
1999 Camaro Z28- Called it the hotrod. Even though it was mostly stock. Still was about the fastest thing on the street when I owned it back from 03-07.
1991 Brougham- Called it the Brougham, BTW, its pronounced "BROAM", not ****ing "BRO-HAM". Its french word, wish all the hood rats would say it right.
1998 Camaro Z28 convertible- Called it whitie. Cause it was white. Awesome color on that car with the dark grey leather, black emblems, and black top. I usually hate white cars, but it worked for that car.
1995 Fleetwood- I call it "Big Red", since the name fits and reminds me of a really cool dog. My best friend back in high school had a shorthaired, red dachshund named "Big Red". Sweetest dog I ever knew, they named her that since she would never get "big".

A hood rat is a low class (trashy) person who lives in the hood. They (at least here) are defined as uneducated poor black people who live in a severely depressed area of town, are constantly in trouble with the law, and aspire to the stereotypes of the "dirty south" subculture.

My 1965 Nissan Cedric 2800 Speciale was called "Cedric," I really couldn't improve on the company's name for this car. Despite being Nissan's equivalent of a Cadillac Fleetwood, and a favorite car of the Yakusa, at the time, "Cedric" just didn't yield up anything interesting enough, or unique enough to inspire a more unique name. The car, which was quite large, compared to the vast majority Japanese cars of 1960's reminded me of a long wheelbase Rambler that had been customized Yamaguchi-san the local Shinto shrine architect. The dash board was inlaid with real wood and came across as quite "Oriental" in feeling, sort of Chinese restaurant meets American Motors. It had a tape type speedometer that scrolled a red line across the instrument cluster. It did have a decent radio which I used to listen to Radio Moscow on my trips back and for to Sapporo to teach interpreter students English .... pulled it in beatifically! The upholstery was a black brocade done in an Oriental style. I don't remember what kind of carpets the car had , because on Hokkaido everyone had thick plastic faced, bright green, all encompassing floor mats fitted to cope with the perpetual snow and slush. "Cedric" was fitted with snow tires to cope with compacted, but unplowed, snow covered roads. Summer was short that I never bothered to put regular tires on him. Like many things Japanese, "Cedric" did his job of transporting me and my friends around the island of Hokkaido as we explored our temporary home. One interesting point, during student protest riots for the return of Okinawa to Japanese sovereignty, the students were turning over taxi cabs and private cars and setting them on fire around Midori Park in central Sapporo, but despite "Cedric" being parked on a side street fully visible to the protesters and displaying a Japanese license plate clearly identifying him as an American's car, he was left unscathed and lived in my possession till I left Japan. I might add the "Cedric did have an excellent heater and defroster in addition to his Soviet loving radio!

Here is a Cedric 2800 Speciale just like "Cedric"

In order of ownership/drivership:

1964 Chevrolet Impala (the one I grew up with and learned to drive in): Nellie, after Roy Rogers' Jeep (my mother named her)
1974 Toyota Celica: Winthrop, later changed to stupidlittlejapcar when it started falling apart
1989 Hyundai Excel: Rover, because it was slow as a dog
1991 Chevrolet Corsica: Blue Belle
1995 Honda Accord: Tallulah, after Tallulah Bankhead, or more accurately, Lucille Ball's impersonation of Tallulah Bankhead (hello, dahling)
1999 Honda Accord: Pugsley, after the son in the Addams Family
1964 Chevrolet Impala: Betty; when I bought her, I asked the previous owner if the car had a name, and he said it was Betty. I thought it was perfect for her.
1991 Cadillac Sedan de Ville: Cruella, after my favorite Disney villain
2001 Cadillac Seville: Sabrina, after the Audrey Hepburn movie since she is also beautiful, sleek, elegant and sophisticated

My Cadillac got her name because I liked the name and could directly link it to (why I believe) I received the car in the first place. The whole way that "Branwen" and "Brougham" happen to begin with the same consonant-cluster is purely an unfortunate coincidence. I guess I could never name a future daughter Branwen now though. Oh well, plenty more where that came from.

Lots of people call their cars the "Batillac," being analagous to Batman. Mine's the Battillac, like "Battle," in the spirit of competition. The name first came around when I saw a CDV completely covered in thick sheet steel and steel spikes, with half-track inspired front windows. I saw it, and just blurted out "Battillac." I gave my car the name sometime after that.

Even if someone else does call their car the Battillac, I don't care. I'd probably get along with them very well.

Huzzah, I am no longer the only one with such an infliction.

Also, rather distant from my intention in posting that. Many people do in fact call their cars that and if they live in South Florida, which I can only presume you still do, I may actually know the source of the armoured Coupe you had seen.

Moved myself to central Florida last year. Like it much better up here. I was actually referring to a car I had seen photos of online, never actually met the armoured car in person. The pictured owner of this one didn't seem like the sort you'd consort with, trust me. I wish I could dig it up, it was hilarious.

Haha! I was actually thinking about writing some sort of appreciatory letter to Ralph Nader, feigning interest in the garbage he has done over his career, pretending to be supportive of it, just to include a photo of myself smiling next to the car at the end, and see if it still got one of their thank-you letters, or if they'd detect the sarcasm.

Weird, silly? I say fun, makes it personal even if you're the only one who knows it's name.

Surely I can't be the only one! What are some names out there??

In no particular order:

"Branwen" - '87 Cadillac Brougham Crown Sovereign Hearse by Superior.

"Big Blue" - '72 Lincoln Continental Mark IV (though it is only like, 19.5 feet long, so it's not really a big car)

"The Pontiac" - '67 GTO.

"My Father's Car" or "Dad's Car" - '67 Chevelle SS with a 510 engine designed for dragstrips.

"The Ford" - '02 Expedition.

"The New Ford" - The '04 Expedition.

"Blockbuster" - '85 Mack Superliner.

And my bike, which is a '68 Triumph Bonneville has no name. Occasionally lovingly referred to as "My Favourite Doorstop". Thereby, the only one that has a "real name" is the Cadillac, whereas the Mack has a name, but not like a person would (Named after a song by The Sweet), the Chevrolet is eternally recognized as having been my Father's (who never named it) the Lincoln, as with the Mack, has a title and the two fords and the Pontiac are just called by the company that built them.

Were I the kind of person who believes in selling my cars, I would most likely insist that their name go with them and that their new owner use it, were it one of the ones that actually had a name.

(surprisingly) I actually have not acquired any new cars since my last post in this thread or when I started it Can't recall when I actually started it)

However, with me looking for a bus, there have already been several names people have referred to them as.

I also thought about what I would put on a custom plate for my Cadillac if I wanted one. I think I would have to do away with my handicapped plate, to allow for more than five letters. "Branwen" (which is my Cadillac's name) would fit, but I would rather not put that. NEMESIS seems like a good choice though.

Not a Ford guy myself (yet I own two) but I have plenty of experience with the Interceptors, since we have owned a few in my family, including the aforementioned one, which is my brother's. Cheap, reliable, fun, fullsize, American car. What's not to love? If you're really interested (not sure what they sell for in NJ, but in FL, you will rarely if ever see one go for over $4,000) I can find you one, if you're willing to come get it/have it shipped. I bet there are dozens on Ebay every month too, but it is usually better to not buy a car sight-unseen unless you can send someone to check it out/testdrive it.

Of course, my brother also has questionable taste in cars and owns a massively lifted offroad TOYOTA pickup, a '68 Cadillac factory limousine, once owned a souped up foxbody mustang and even has a Hearse. What kind of weird person drives a Hearse?

The Interceptor is fun, but realistically, I have made better use of the two F150's I borrowed along with it. Very similar to my Expeditions, but each specializes in a different field and my Expeditions couldn't be used for this, so I took advantage of this opportunity.

Right before I bought my CTS I almost bought a 2012 Caprice PPV Chromaflare grey with 825 miles for $22K that my b.f arranged a deal on.
My b.f. still says I should have gotten it instead of the CTS he said if I put the SLP G8 Firehawk wheels on it with a vararam cold air kit, catback and tune on it I could have called it a day and had more power with a little better mileage than the CTS.

I couldn't get a decent video. It doesn't do this at all unless the car thinks it's night. Initially it bugged me (for about a second) that the car was "using up" the headlight motor for no reason. Then I realized, it's moving the headlights anytime they are on and you turn the steering wheel, so one extra "eye roll" cycle at start up doesn't add any appreciable percent to the motor run times.

Depending upon the time of day, temperature, difficulty of repair/maintenance, bourbon level and blood shed my car and trucks may have one of several rather descriptive names. Further disclosure would not be in the best interest of journalism.

^^^ It is well known that when it comes to descriptive names, sailors come up with the best. A Command Master Chief must hold the sailor equivalent of a PhD in creative names!

Command Master Chief is the epitome of correctness, finesse, grammar, politeness, couth and decency. "Submariner" (sub-mah-reen-er) on the other hand, is a different story.

I haven't named the Honda yet. It's a lease so maybe I'll name it Lisa, but that's my mom's name (she always did want me to buy a Honda though....)

I'd name the hearse "Charon" the ferryman across the river Styx to Hades. Or "Styx Cruiser."

Someone suggested Charon for my Hearse's name. She eventually earned her name. I never name something until it earns one and it just sort of...sticks.
