: Smoked Tails

Hi All,
I've tried searching through the forums but have been unable to find a decent thread that discusses smoking the taillights. A lot of the "de-chromed" V's out there I see are still rocking stock red tails. I understand it may be a legal issue, but there has to be a way to tint/smoke the lights within the legal code. I'm ideally looking to smoke the lenses, while still maintaining a red base. Any ideas or recommendations??
Thanks
Eric

Speak.... and I shall appear.

My painter used clear with some black mixed in to get the desired "tint" level for the lights/markers.

Same thing as above, mix of black/clear, then polished, left B-up lights clear. all done by local detail/tint shop.

Yeah, sorry I don't have better pictures, but I also did a light "smoke"... it looks pretty dark in low light and you can kinda see the difference when the sun hits em versus not, but the LEDS are so damn bright you can't tell with the lights or brakes on. Go for it, looks great. (IMO the lights are too damn big on the wagon)

Pics look great. Any DIY methods? How much did your shops charge to do it?

I can't remember exactly how much they were to tint. I think it was about $200.00.

Unless you a a good painter, I would have it done by someone that knows what they doing. Find someone that can give you some refernces and talk to him about how it does it. My guy mixes black with clear and shoots multiple coats buffing between coats. He does his best to make them dark while allowing as much translucency as possible.

Stay away from "night shade" or other rattle can crap. They look horrible and really effect the output of the lights. I had another set done on my Charger SRT8 by another painter who didn't really know what he was doing and, although they looked good, they blocked way too much light. I ended up pulling those tails out and going with a good "legal" set of aftermarket smoked led lights. There are a bunch of those for the Charger. Not so much for our car.

Tinted tails tend to draw the attention of LEOs but leaving the reverse lights clear tends to make them a little less noticible to cops. I also found a set of slightly scratched used tails that I keep around. Cost me about $200.00 with a little patience and shopping. If I did it again, I would buy some tails off of a wrecked CTS and have them tinted and keep the factory tails stock. If they used tails have minor scratches when you get them, the tint will hide it or they will polish out.

With two sets of tails, if I get a ticket for the tint, I can swap out to the regular tails (three big "wingnuts" and the electrical connector) show the court/prosecutor and get the case dismissed. Then I go home and put the tints back in.

Try Plasti Dip smoke. Check out my thread because I have pictures of me doing this to my chrome...although it makes things a gray color but nowhere near black.

Nice volks. How much do those run and do they have a size to fit the coupes?

They run about $1100 a rim... and they didn't have much in the way of sizes. I had to use spacers and custom made hubcentric rings to get it all to fit. Honestly I probably wouldn't do it again if I had known what a pain it would be. However, I did like the look and knowing I'm probably the only person who's done it. :)

Where'd you get that diffuser that's at the top of your rear window? Really like it!!

For all those with tinted tails? How has the law treated you? I want to do this myself but the car already attracts too much attention as it is... I would hate to rack up even more fix it tickets.... I have already been popped for tinting my sides 50%.

20% tint on the tails. Still plenty bright.
