I have a friend that wants to sell me an 04 cts-v with 135k miles on body. The engine,
Transmission, and rear end all have 25k miles on them.
Engine is a stroker motor with aftermarket heads, cam, headers, and 150 wet shot of
Nos.
Trans is a Z06 6 speed with a stage 3 clutch with billet input and output shafts.
Rear end is a Z06 center chunk and moser heavy duty axles.
I need help determining what is a decent price for car. He is wanting 17k for it and
I'm thinking of buying it. But it's already 8 years old. Can anyone tell me their thoughts on this car?
Who did all of the work? Does he have receipts? How about warranties? I am always skeptical of highly modded cars unless they have the right paperwork showing they were done by a really good shop. Very few people do those type of modifications and not thrash the car. Plus, the chasis and body do have 135k on them and it does make a difference. With the bad economy which is not getting any better.......$14,000.00 tops. Personally, I would look elsewhere unless he was in the 12-13,000 k range.
I'm really not looking for a ctsv. Just looking for a toy that Is ready to go with all the mods done already. Really I'm not even looking for a toy, he just offered it to me.
'04 with 135k miles is worth about $15k retail (at a dealer). Trade in is just under $10k, so private party would put it around $12,500-$13,000 depending on how clean it is.
Rebuilt motor, trans and rear by a reputable shop would in my opinion mean the drivetrain has more life in it than the chassis miles, but it doesn't necessarily make it more valuable. Anytime you crack the motor open, reliability is a concern unless it's backed by some sort of warranty from the shop that built it.
$17,000 is entirely too much for the car in my opinion.
It really sounds suspect to me now. The engine bay pic looks 100% stock except for the K&N filter, which doesn't tell you whether the motor is stroked or not, but it does tell you there is no supercharger, and the intake and throttle body don't appear to have been upgraded, they look like stock LS6 parts. That seems silly to stroke a motor and not address the intake tract, sounds fishy.
The "original" motor was an LS6, NOT an LS3 and NOT with a supercharger. He is loosely referring to an '09+ CTS-V powertrain, which tells me he may either be bullshitting you or doesn't know what he's talking about.
Furthermore, corvette transmissions mount at the rear as opposed to the engine as in our cars, so I find it to be somewhat of am impossibility to mount one in a CTS-V. If there is really a Z06 rear in it, then MAYBE it's possible, but there is no room to put all that in the car, so again, sounds like bullshit. I can't even imagine the fab work involved to make all that work.
After what I've deducted from your statements, I would run, not walk from this car. It doesn't sound like this guy is your friend.
He is a good friend of mine. He traded a lifted diesel truck for it. As for the engine I spoke with him about it. He said he was mistaken about the LS3/LS6 info. He thought it cane factory with the LS3. All I can see on engine is aluminum heads, headers, and nitrous lines. As far as the trans goes I just realized that a Z06 has a trans-axle right? I don't think I will get it for that price. But it's one wild ride.
I've got this bridge for sale...cheap...lots of tolls...make you big money.
