I just bought a 2005 STS, drove it at night for the first time. Are the D/R/1/2/3 (etc...) supposed to light up? The + / - lights up for the autoshift option but not the other side.

Thanks

They do, but unless you have the dash lights cranked up a pretty good way, you can't really see them.

Agreed.

Removal Procedure

(removed images as they no longer link to the removal procedure as I feared would happen)

Using a blunt trim tool release the clip retainers under the arm rest.
Release the clip retainers on the front of the trim panel.
Remove the trim panel.

Release the tabs (1) on the bottom of the shifter position indicator.

Raise the indicator cover in order to access the bulbs mounted on the bottom of the indicator cover.
Turn the bulb socket (1) in order to release it from the indicator cover.

Ludacrisvp, would you mind posting your shifter removal photos again? I just discovered that the light for the shifter is not working in my sts and I'd like to replace the bulb.

Thanks

The bulb costs about $20. I took a generic #73 for about 88 cents and transferred the little blue condom.

What's the procedure of removal in order to get to the bulb?

Photos would be nice...

Thanks

Honestly it's not really rocket science here. Look at it buy some trim tools pop the plastic bezel the wood will then lift out and you'll see it.

You spent more time posting about it than it takes to change the bulb here.

^ Agreed.
Furthermore, you don't even need any trim removal tools. Simply open the center console lid, and with your palm resting just inside the console, pull up on the trim bezel with your fingertips. It pops right up. Then carefully pull up around the sides to release the remaining fasteners and slide it back.
The rest was already covered and is very easy.

The hardest part of the whole deal is extracting the old bulb. I wrapped a small piece of duct tape around it and pulled straight out. You can paint a generic #73 bulb with blue fingernail polish and save yourself $20.
