: Test Drive - 06 STS N*

I have a test drive scheduled today with a 06 STS N*, with 71k, dealer is asking $15,900. This thing is LOADED, looks to have all options including NAV. Anything I should look at specifically? known issues? Do these eat head gaskets like the FWD N* do? Half case leaks? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, almost 100 views and not a single word of advise? Real talkative bunch over here in the STS forum... :)

No Headgasket problems with RWD.
Not many big problems with these.
Check the headlights for signs of water leak. Check the plastic surround at the base of the front seats, it always breaks.

Are you saying don't buy if the "plastic around the front seats" is broken?

That's an inexpensive and easy repair.

I recommend a warranty; especially because I would not buy one that doesn't have ACC & HUD.

Opinions vary; almost as much as differences between the trim levels.

I wouldn't let a broken plastic seat surround stop me if the rest of the car is good. i just had one replaced on my V, at the dealer, $85 for the part and labor (plus tax). If it's broken, use it as a bargaining chip. These are nice cars, enjoy.

Drove it, loved it! Has ACC and HUD, looks totally loaded and CLEAN. Financing has yet to go through but I put $500 down in the mean time...$19k and change out the door after $6k trade-in on my CTS, plus $9,100 to pay off her lean...fingers crossed

Oh, the plastic piece for the seat...completely intact!

Looks real sharp. Ventilated seats too I see. That will be handy with the black leather.

Yeah, it is definitely a sharp looking car...It has been my dream car since I saw one on the show room floor when I bought my old 2001 STS back in 2006...Here is the RPO break down so you guys know what she has to offer :)

Well equipped not fully though. Not a 1sg car and doesn't have perf handling package giving it brembos.

Still a nice car. Enjoy!

Damn! Better look elsewhere then :) Just kidding! I love the car, going to go drive it again today and make sure all the fancy gizmos work before I sign anything too official...I can back out now if need be.

I wouldn't seems like a good buy. I got my 1sg for 19500 with a 4 yr warranty everthing covered for 21000 out the door only 32k miles. So I'd say your gonna do fine. Just beware CTS mods don't apply here. There are few of us in the STS arena who actually prefer to tweak our cars to our liking and there aren't as many so the forums usually pretty dead.

curtc
05-22-12, 12:39 PM
I probably won't mod the STS too much...Haven't done a whole lot to the CTS as it is, clear side markers, LED conversion, added the sport grill, lower mesh grill, and 18" wheels...everything else is still stock.

I'll probably tint the STS, get some 20's at some point, and do the exhaust to give that N* some more growl :) I put Dynomax SuperTurbo muffler's on my first Cadillac, 95 STS, and that sucker sounded mean!

Thanks for all the insight and advice fellas, even if you're a small bunch you've all been very helpful. I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE: Dealership just called...Financing has been approved! Going to go down there tonight and make sure everything works as far as the NAV and ACC before I sign the offical bill of sale. Can't f'ing wait to take this beauty home!

Another member and I compared the fully loaded 1SF to the 1SG and couldn't find a significant difference. I think you've found a jewel. Enjoy.

If you decide aganst a warranty, budget accordingly. Surprises will be spendy.

curtc

I drove a 2001 STS for 5 years up to 233k, I know all about expensive surprises, believe me :)

1BadCadSTS

1sg has the STS-v steering gear ratio and additional coolers that the 1sf couldn't have.

EChas3
05-23-12, 11:02 PM
Yes, the ZF steering (NV7) is nice for those of us that enjoy a heavy feel. It stands to reason that this would be easier on the often problematic power steering pump. I wonder if failure rates vary...

With regard to engine cooling, 1SF's could still get the Performance Cooling Package (V03). I recall a member from the Mid-east had even more cooling than available domestically. Was the RPO 1SZ?

Old hands may observe how often I post that STS trim levels address a wide range of driver preferences. Opinions vary and Cadillac knows so do their buyers. Chazglenn3 and I compared build sheets and found the most significant difference between our cars was his 'F' to my 'G' in the '1S' code. "Pride goeth before a fall."

These cars are an outstanding value. I love mine. My wife's is pretty nice, too.

Get 90 day warranty from the dealer. 71 k look for drips off the waterpump bushing. Run all the codes. You want no codes from the magna ride. Do you have offset rims?

curtc
05-25-12, 12:48 AM
The tires are offset, yes.

05-26-12, 11:44 AM
I believe another difference between the 1SF and 1SG is the full leather interior in the 1SG. 1SF has leather seating areas only. And I think it has a different kind of leather.

Maximln
05-26-12, 07:43 PM
I had heard they didn't have headgasket problems too but mine did! Just like my last 2 STS's so I'm used to it by now! ha ha They of course had to remove the engine to replace it.

No Headgasket problems with RWD.
Not many big problems with these.
Check the headlights for signs of water leak. Check the plastic surround at the base of the front seats, it always breaks.

----------

The Tuscany leather was a stand alone option. I have a 1SF that has it.

The offset tires are.not rotatable. For a daily driver it adds cost.

Ludacrisvp
05-27-12, 12:04 PM
It only adds to it if you keep them staggered.

curtc
05-27-12, 01:47 PM
Yeah, I definitely plan on buying a matching set when these wear out..245's more than likely, if those won't rub up front that is...

Ludacrisvp
05-27-12, 02:28 PM
Not sure on what the safe sizes are for the 18" stock staggered setup with the N*, perhaps someone that has made the switch can enlighten us.
On a side note, the tires on mine were new when I purchased it (still had the little rubber nipples on the tread).

All 235/50 or 255/45 18s. Anything else will throw the speedo off.

That applies only to Platinum editions which also have the suede headlining.

The sound of the nice headliner makes me wish I could have found a Platinum edition even more. :-/
I have the Tuscany Leather option though.
Regarding the "Full" leather interior, what surfaces does that include?
I see leather on the door panels for a small section above the pull handle, and around the wood trim too. But not the top of the door panel nor any part of the dash. Its all a textured padded rubbery feeling.
The center console door is leather too, and all portions of the seats are leather. I did note the nice attention to detail in the leather wrapping of the steering wheel in the STS, much improved from the leather wrapped 02 DTS I had as the sewing seam is flush in the STS compared to the pursed / puckered feeling of the other wheel.

Did the platinum have the dashboard covered in leather?

1BadCadSTS
05-28-12, 10:59 AM
The platinum had the same interior as the v series only no suede. All leather.

I prefer the v suede to the all leather.

255/45R18 fit on the front without rubbing. My DPO (& his Dumb Dealer) rotated the tires on the 2006 I bought; it had the 235/50R18's on the back!
