To be completely I'm not too impressed with new gt500. It's still a live rear axle and we all know how much fun that is. It's fast, but in my opinion not a complete package like the zl1. I owned a 2012 gt500 and it was just a nightmare, especially coming from a c63 to the gt500. Forget about hooking on anything but drag radials or taking turns on anything but a perfect road. The new gt500 numbers are impressive and I like the looks, but would never own one until it comes with an IRS.

Almost $70K fully loaded. That's a bit much for a pony car which is still what it is at the end of the day. I can't see it being a comfortable daily driver. I have never been a Ford guy and while Ford did a great job with that car, the ZL1 just looks way meaner. I never cared for the looks of the Mustang over the new Camaro.

The Shelby is definitely legit. As far as driving it....Who's going to drive this car daily? Its meant for the track (or the car shows :) ).

'Stang owners should be thanking Chevy for this opportunity. Now Chevy has to ante up with the ZL1's power and delivery given that on the numbers front, Ford just ate their lunch.

I LOVE this American pony car war.....and we, the car enthusiasts, win whether Chevy or Ford fan. Competition is what this country is all about, right?

Nueron, I think you'll be surprised by how many get daily driven :) Nice, car. I would love to have one. Definately sets the bar.

Here's another take on the Shelby GT500 via Jalopnik - from the perspective of a car enthusiast instead of professional driver -> http://jalopnik.com/5911657/first-drive-2013-ford-shelby-gt500

$65k for 662 horses & 0-60 in 3.5?

That's called the newest "best" performance value in American cars. Congrats to Ford, they've really stepped things up.

The GT500 carries a lot more power vs. the ZL1 and it's only a smidge faster 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile and look at how much more it costs than the ZL1!! I located a fully loaded GT500 locally and the MSRP was: $67K. I located several local ZL1s at $55K. I can take a ZL1 and mod it for less than the difference in cost and get more power out of it and have a better looking car with IRS. It's a no brainer to me. Only advantage GT500 has really is that it comes with a factory warranty that covers that much power out of the box. In the real world, the ZL1 wins.

smidge faster......... ZL1 117 mph in the quarter. GT500 125 mph. Thats a beating ;). And I like the ZL1

I was referring to times, not MPH on the trap.

IMO "performance value" applies only to stock, non modded cars. Otherwise the late 90's Supra Turbo would be the best performance value on the planet. Put drag radials or slicks on the GT500 and ZL1 and that power difference will show in greater detail.

0-60 in 3.5 on street tires for $65k is pretty amazing.

We all proclaim our V's "bang for the buck" compared to all other stock 4 doors out there. I could buy a used M3 for $25k and put $40k in mods into it and make it faster than the V...that doesn't make it a better value in my mind.

Start putting $$$ into anything and things get really tricky. Stock for stock, the GT500 is the best value for that type of power, just like our V's are the best value in the 4-door market. I would prefer the ZL1's magnetic suspension.

Gotcha. GT500 11.6 sec q mile. ZL1 12.1( both motor trend)..... half a second is a beating ;) I got mocked for months when I was young for quoting some 0-60 numbers.Never again. Lol
second what Socal V said!

Never owned a ford. Not a big fan. But that car is pretty sweet. Those pix of the motor are amazing! The numbers for 0 to 60 and quarter mile are awesome. You can't hate on that. Put it on a track maybe not so good. All in all a great car and it only fuels GM to do more! V 3 will be 650+ hp!

Time for GM to put the Eaton 2.3 blower on our V, do some Upper/lower pullies swaps and watch the HP's climb!!! Yes the Rustange is a good deal for the money, but it's still a Stang who's value will fall like a rock when it's driven off the lot! But I have to give it's props for leading the HP wars for know!!!!!

I am anxious to see how Ford handles things when GT500s with no mods start popping drivetrain components.

I will say this; the Ford 5.4L with headers and Borla is the sweetest exhaust note I have ever heard on a car.

It's hard to argue that it's not a great car, solid rear axle or not. Especially for the price. It is blisteringly fast.

that 997 has the same problem I had with my b5 S4. It's depreciated by a lot, but it still has the mantiance costs and parts/problems of a (in this case) $140K vehicle. Unless you're a huge DIY or just like buying second-hand six-figure new cars for a year or two before flipping them, there's no good end to that kind of ownership.

I'll say it.

I like the stang better than the camaro.

the refreshed retro look is better than the maro, the interior is better(the ford has REAL recaro's, it acutally has navigation.. what's the maro have again?) , the performance is better.. it's a better pony car, that's why it costs more.

the old terminators and 30V N/A 4.6's still hold a special place in my heart as one of the greatest exhaust V8 noises.

I pulled up behind an M5 this morning in a left turn lane. I saw the guy mirror-check me, and when the light turned green, he waited for the car in front of him to get a good distance on him, then jumps on it so the poor guy in the Camaro behind him can see what a real performance car can do. That poor guy (me) was treated to the most ricer-sounding exhaust I have ever heard in my life. I really would have thought a V10 would sound a little better than a civic with a coffee can muffler. This one did not. As an aside, he was lucky to have stability control.

The S85 sounds very raspy, infact all V10's sound fairly raspy until you get them past at least 4 grand, but they're still no V8.. you're basicly going for the F1 noise over something that sounds like it could pull an aircraft carrier.

The one I heard was very clearly an aftermarket exhaust, and a really crappy one at that.

Oddly enough, I heard a Masseratti Quatroporte at a Cars and Coffee recently...one of the best "Stock" exhaust notes I've ever heard. For me though, nothing beats a Ferrari.

Back to original topic.
I checked on Canadian Ford website for price on the 2013 Cobra:
Starting price $77,709 including sales tax
Fully loaded with all the goodies will set you back $82,666

Probably gonna make a bunch of people mad but..... just appearence wise of the Ford " motor " only.... man that motor looks awesome. The V and the zl1 look so plane. All the plastice covers, you pull them off and its just not pretty. Thats all I am saying. I love the LSA. Best GM motor I have ever had. Man you pop the hood of that ford and that is just car motor "porn"!!!!!!

True; I had a Viper and its exhaust note was not unlike that of a UPS truck. Even guys in our local meets tried every exhaust setup and the V10 simply does not want to appeal to the ears.

I applaud Ford for this car....let's face it if you are driving your V and this Cobra pulls up next to you the best thing to do is yield and not hit the horn (stock for stock).

Someone mentioned earlier the reason why I LOVE what Ford does with the Cobra is that it comes with so much power and a warranty. I thought they would lose thier shirt when I bought my '03 Cobra but it turns out the motors are so well engineered that they didn't.

For those wondering why GM would not want to up the ante...well let's just say I would take the 4.6L blown V8 in my '03 Cobra any day of the week over the V2 motor. It's fundamentally a better engineered and built motor with DOHC and all forged internals. I know lots of guys pushing 800-900hp to the wheels with the stock 4.6L windsor motor. I would never do that with the LSA despite the huge displacement advantage.

The only thing I would be nervous about if I were Ford is that they are not using exclusively aluminum blocks. With that type of power I don't mind the extra weight of an iron block as it can't hurt for logevity.

Just my thoughts...
