: Normal running Temperature on 2004 XLR running and at idle?

I just purchase 2004 XLR the Temperature on hwy seems to be like 190 to 200 but at a red light its pushing to 220 plus my question is what would be normal?

The thermostat doesn't even open until 195 degrees to allow coolant to enter the radiator. The cooling fan low duty cycle starts at 204 degrees, and goes to high speed at 235 degrees. High coolant temp is 256 degrees at which time a message will flash on the DIC.

While you're probably okay, when was the last time the DEXCOOL coolant was changed? If you don't know, it wouldn't hurt to do so.

204 ??? or 224.

The cooling fans cycle on and off with no A/C function set. Temp, in heavy stop&go traffic, should creep to about 224, fans go to SLOW, and the temp creeps down to 213, fans stop. Cycle repeats. With some A/C or DEFROST function set, fans run in SLOW all the time, so you should see temps of 195-205 all the time. I believe the fans don't even run over 40+ mph - they aren't needed. (Fans go to FAST at 304 - yep, 304 - degrees transmission fluid.)

The fan duty cycle switches to HIGH at 270 degrees for the transmission fluid. The cooling fan duty cycle starts when A/C pressure reaches approx. 160 psi and goes to HIGH speed at 360 psi.

Regardless of vehicle speed, if the conditions warrant, the fan will run.

Prefacing any submarine qual checkout with, "I believe . . . " always resulted in me getting lookups to make sure. Here's the hot cXXk: 2004 XLR Service Manual pg 6-595.

Does the XLR-V radiator do a better job in coolant circulating and temps??? when swapped into an XLR ???

And on my 99 vette i used to own the Dewitt radiator made a huge difference plus added the Devinces fan switch regulator so one can set when the main fan comes on...that was great...i never saw temps over 190:alchi::alchi: and i WAS sober...lol

The original (base) XLR radiator was prone to split. The design was improved when the V came out and subsequently installed in all XLRs during the build cycle. The only XLR radiator available from GM is the improved model. It's one of the cheaper (<$200 w/o labor) components to replace.

My temp stays pretty much at 220 (it's 100+ degrees here) when it's really hot out. The car runs great. Idling at a light may induce the aux fan to start.
