: Factory air intake question

I have a 98 Deville... the computer that's in the bottom intake chamber below the air filter box is the PCM or is it something else? Is it also a thermal electronic device that actually cools down the surrounding air or is it just a big slab of aluminum?

Yes, that's the PCM. It does not cool the surrounding air, IT is cooled by the intake air flow over it.

It's a big, useless slab of carefully designed aluminum used for airflow control. Don't even read the ID sticker, cut off the 100 or so wires, tape them up and pitch it. The drivetrain will love you. You will gain 126 hp and the airbox will flow twice as much air as a K&N filter modified with 10W-50 magic oil.

Haha no I asked this because I didn't know what that thing is and why is it in an air intake. So if the PCM is not in the intake it'll overheat unless there's a good-sized fan blowing at it then?

Maybe, maybe not - but the IAT flowing through the intake airbox is usually a lot lower than the ambient air in the engine compartment, especially at highway speeds. After several years of watching IAT with a ScanGauge, (both in the truck and car) at highway speeds the IAT runs about 6 - 10 degrees above outside ambient; in suburban driving (lower airflow into the engine) gets to 10 - 25 degrees above ambient, and slow stop and go city driving allows the IAT to go as high as 155 because there's very little airflow into the engine and the ducting itself heats up as engine compartment temperature increases. Get moving again and the IAT drops slowly as the intake ducting cools.

So.......There are times when the PCM sees temps over 150...........I have no idea what temp limits Siemens built the PCM's to tolerate, but they can take some heat.

So this also means that if the intake sucked up water then the PCM will fry before water gets into the engine right? I remember I took a picture of the PCM a few years ago... ahh found it

As you can see there is a removable computer chip in there under a pretty hefty sealed aluminum cover. Maybe this is how they go from vin Y to vin 9 and vice versa without having to redesign a new circuit board?

The only way the intake will suck up water is if you drive through 2-3 feet of water.

No, but what that is escapes me at the moment. Maybe someone else will remember.
