: Towing in third gear

What's the recommended top speed/rpms in third gear while towing? I know cars were geared different in the past.

I don't think there is a "recommended" top. You'll be at a 1:1 gear ratio so the RPM's will be higher, but nothing out of line or detrimental at highway speeds.

The manual says 3rd gear, so you'll be good. The idea is that you get more power and torque than in overdrive. Your year manual (2003) says to pop it in third when you're approaching a long or steep grade, in order to keep your brakes from failing. It also says to reduce speed to 45-50 mph, as well as keeping the car out of 2nd gear, and RPM below 3800. Furthermore, if you're climbing a 4%+ grade or a grade in 90+ degree heat, your cooling system may struggle to perform well enough to keep the engine cool.

Basically, don't drive like a teenager and you'll be good. Drive like a GRANDMA! :histeric:
