Are you guys having a problem with the black covering on the floor shifter coming lose/peeling? any fix?

Mine looks the same. The weather has not been conducive to finding a fix..

I have seen quite a few cadillacs like that. I am not sure on the procedures on how to do this, but you may find a way to take off the plastic things and just paint them. If you can, you may be able to paint it a little right in the car. I konw this sounds like a cheapy fix, but it might just work.

The part's not expensive, The job's a little challenging but not bad depending on your level of expertise in mechanical repairs. My neighbor did his by himself and he's a self proclaimed idiot when it comes to wrenching. I didn't help him do the job so I can't really say how tough it was to do.

Kcnewell is right. The part is only about $40 and not too hard to change. I think what happens is that the cup holder is right over that part and liquid leaks on it. The black plastic part peels apart and then looks bad. Once changed, the car looks new again!! :)

The answer to that my friend.......lies buried in the ever popular Cadillac Factory Service Manual. I'd love to give you a step by step but I've never done one.

I don't blame you there...I quit foolin' with those idiots a long time ago! They just don't seem to give a damn about the customer from what I've seen!

Once you bought the car they look at you as pond scum. I rarely take my cars to the dealership , in fact I only take them to get a check up on the electrical system or the tranny. I do this once every 2 years.

Ain't that the truth...Till you sign on the dotted line the salesperson knows your name and acts like your best buddy. After you sign he treats you like you've got the plauge!

I also prefer doing my own service work, except when the car is under warranty (duh). I think that if you get a service manual and you tackle this job it will pay for itself in the labor savings the 1st job.

Fortunately, here in town the dealers are nice to me (my dad is their doctor, HEHEHE), so i would go to dealers for stuff im not so sure on.

Common problem. The $40 part is no longer available. They want you to buy the compete shifter/indicator for about $90.

The shifter trim is like a cartridge. It rolls up at each end. You can dismantle this setup and apply new tape to the foil that is used to give it structure. It is time consuming and requires some careful work to avoid air bubbles etc. It is also difficult to trim around the shifter plastic part. But can be done.....
