So recently check engine light has come on, I have taken my care to advance auto. They said I have an emission code being brought up on the diagnostic tool for a clogged Catalytic converter. I will admit I am guilty for putting 89 and 87 in my car and rarely 91 did not think much of it. The car is running good and everything, just curious any solution to cleaning the cat without having to install a new one? also what is the price and labor on a repair like this. Again 05 sts v8 90k on the odo.

Regards,
Kreem

Hello Kreem. The cats in your 05 V8 are covered under an extended 200k mile warranty by GM. I had mines replaced for free last year so if you are having cat problems take your ride to the dealer for the free fix.:cloud9: ( If you need the recall letter I can fax it to you or anybody else upon request.)

Also, I don't think the lower octane would contribute to the cats demise... AND GM recognizes there is a problem with these cats and has extended the 8yr/80K to a 12yr/120K warranty because of it. I have a letter from them offering a refund had I paid for a cat prior to that (I didn't) and explaining the expanded coverage....

More Info on the Recall (from alldatadiy.com):

Vehicles Involved
Involved are certain 2004-2005 model year Cadillac SRX and 2005 model year Cadillac STS vehicles equipped with a 4.6L engine (LH2), and built within the following VIN breakpoints:
2005 STS From 50100074 to 50237744

This is for the extended coverage. If you're not in that range of VIN, I guess you gotta pay.

I've read that only V8's qualify. If you're under 80k miles, you're covered under the EPA req. warranty.

Well mine finally decided to bite the bullet at 140,000 miles. If anybody still has the recall flyer/letter saved on their computer and can send it to me it'd be much appreciated. The link in the other threads says the picture file that had been uploaded is not there any more.

It ONLY applies to the v8. Not the 6.

I have the v8 and my Vin falls within the range of the recalled cars. I just wanted the letter that was sent out but I will try to get a service set up without having to have it.

You don't need the letter. The dealer will look up the VIN and if it is eligible will fix it under the special warranty.

:yeah: Shouldn't have any hassle at all since it is special coverage, all you need is the VIN #.

I just had my check engine light turn on too. Nothing seems wrong with the car, so I am suspecting either a bad oxygen sensor, or from the sounds of it even more likely, a bad cat.

Thanks to you guys, now I know I should bring it to the dealer, as I am otherwise out of warranty (and the nearest dealer is miles away).

Edit: So sure enough, it is a bad cat. My mechanic pulled he codes for me.

Does anyone know, if one goes bad, would they replace both? My mechanic said the other can't be far behind, and the engine will run a lot better if both are balanced as well.

I'd be VERY surprised if they'd replace a cat that met specs; even by .0001 of spec.

Just give the dealer your VIN, if it's covered they'll let you know.
