Thanks to those who suggested Advance Auto as a source of obtaining an errror code from SERVICE ENGINE SOON light. They obtained code P085 (or P035 not sure of the number), but the code read "Crankshaft Position Sensor". The car in out of warranty and it is a dealer only item.
Has anyone with a 2000 had similiar problem? Just curious so I know what price to expect.
Thanks to all who helped with this problem.
Joe

My 2000 STS had faulty crank sensors. It was a problem in 2000 with the contractor who made them. I don't think there was a recall for them, so you will have to get them from a dealer, or www.gmotors.com for cheaper ones.

This is a very common problem on the 2000-2003 Deville's it is covered under TSB 02-06-04-019 . The code you got is probably P0385 (Crank Position Sensor B). You are probably also experiencing an occasional hard to start or a engine bump or stall when driving... This will only get worse. The bad news is expect to pay about $385 to have both sensors replaced at a caddy dealer. The good news is the sensors have been redesigned to be more reliable so you should replace both the A and B sensors. The latest GM part number is 12575481 for the upper and 12575482 for the lower crank position sensors. Even though your Deville is out of warranty the dealer may replace them free of charge depending on the mileage on your Deville. (They did my 2000 Deville with 10k miles on it last month as a "gesture of good will")
