What will you use for a shift knob?

Edit: nevermind, it's in the first picture in the corner...

I may go this route if I end up not going with a full blown removable race wheel at first...

Thanks for the link btw twitch. I contacted them. They want $389 to do my wheel in alcantara. Now I just need to find a used Camaro wheel to send them. Lest I park my car for a week which I can't do.

is that the stock knob?

Installed everything last night. Very easy to do the wheel with proper tools and a gentle touch releasing the clips for the airbag.

Knob is a UUC. Color is charcoal.

As you can see the wheel is slightly fatter than stock. I would however recommend the thicker padding on the V if you want it noticeable. The alcantara does feel great though. Takes a bit of getting used to palming the wheel in tight turns.

Side note: The CTS wheel I got had the controls with the volume knob on the right and "1234" on the left. I plugged it in and none of the controls worked in my car.

Shame. That volume control knob on the wheel is pure win.

So with the thin padding it's not noticiable over the stock thickness? Or do you mean noticeable as in standing out in the car?

JimmyH

They recommend the thicker padding with alcantara since it is not as thick as leather.

I meant noticeable in your hand. I didn't want it to stand out but it would have been nice if it felt better.

I wish this was mentioned to me before the work was done.

Is the fabric a good match for the seat inserts? Looks good!

It's certainly lighter than the inserts. But depending on lighting and angle your looking at it, both the inserts and alcantara can change a few shades so it's close. I'll get back to you on this after I've lived with it a little more. Only drove the car a bit the other night, and haven't had it out in the light yet. I do love opening the door, and it's the first thing I see as I'm getting in the V :)

Edit: Keep in mind all the in car pics are with the flash on (Yes I got up early in the morning to get some pics for you guys). The alcanara looks grey. But in the pics emailed to me from the shop they almost look black.

So ya think the Black would be a better match than the Charcoal ?

i'm thinking of black, with silver or black stitch - extra thick pad

I'm the wrong person to ask about the black. I just didn't like it. Shady got his wheel done in black so hopefully he'll post up some pics soon.
The extra thick padding is a must!

Whose V is that Chris?

One of the Powell cars that used to run Grand-Am...

Can someone that has their wheel removed measure the diameter and count the splines on the steering shaft for me ?
I have to order an adapter hub and the V is 2 hours away...

Thanks

Love the look and feel of Alcantera!!! Great mod! I'd love to do this to my car with the V2 shifter knob to match. Is there a writeup somewhere of how to do the steering wheel swap? I certainly wouldn't want to set of the airbag on accident or mess up the clips.

I'm glad you shared this, looks great! I actually contacted Dallas last year about this same thing, cool to see an actual V result! I haven't done mine yet because I've been trying to come up with a solution for the ugly ass airbag center cover with ugly sticker Cadillac emblem.. Been thinking over possibly trying to cut out the emblem of a V2 Steering wheel and have dallas wrap the center piece and then figure out a way to attach that V2 emblem.

Looks great. Got to love Alcantara. One of the few things I miss about my C6 are the alcantara pieces from Down South Vettes. Wish there was a vendor that was doing D shaped wheels like DSV or Apsis for the CTSV.

I just scored a used CTS wheel on ebay for $24 shipped. I plan to do this mod, just not sure when I can drop the cash to get it covered just yet before the V goes into storage.

Shady, can you post pics of yours mounted with the black instead of the charcoal? I'm still torn between the two, but I'm leaning towards black. I'm hoping the black would match the V2 shift knob better.

It's posted. There's a few threads and I'm pretty sure they're all linked, including this one.

I used a puller. But it did come off VERY easy. I'm sure it would've come off by hand.

Just a quick update on how the parts are holding up.

The steering wheel, where I hold it, seemed to be getting a little flat. Looked as if the fuze was getting worn out. You needed to look real close though, cuz even when I told people what to look for, they couldn't see any difference from the rest of the wheel.
The shift knob however was shot. It looked totally worn and smooth. Living in NYC, I do a lot of shifting.

Then I remembered something I read before I did the mod. So I dipped a rag in some soapy water and wrung it out till it was just damp.Wiped everything down and let it dry. I was shocked with the results. Everything looked new again, even the shift knob which I thought was too far gone. It's all nice and fuzzy again and looks and feels great.

I would certainly recommend this a a nice "touch-up" mod.
