Two years ago, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety celebrated its fiftieth anniversary (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/17/video-iihs-celebrates-50th-anniversary-by-crashing-modern-malib/) by taping the offset frontal crash of a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtxd27jlZ_g) into a 2009 Chevy Malibu (http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/malibu). The Bel Air did not handle it well. The Speed TV show Stuntbusters (http://www.speedtv.com/video/tv-shows/stuntbusters/stuntbusters-action-packed-1263995442001/1), which airs on Tuesdays and "explores motoring myths behind the latest automotive technology," did the same with two Cadillacs.

The show parked a 1962 Cadillac (http://www.autoblog.com/cadillac) Sedan de Ville a mile from a 2002 Deville and ran them into each other, head-on, at 50 miles per hour. Enthusiasts are constantly complaining about how big and heavy cars have become, but you do not want to be in a crash while driving a car that predates modern passive safety innovations. For a reminder why, there's a video after the jump (http://www.cadillacforums.com/2011/11/27/1962-cadillac-vs-2002-cadillac-in-head-on-collision/#continued).Continue reading 1962 Cadillac vs. 2002 Cadillac in head-on collision (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/27/1962-cadillac-vs-2002-cadillac-in-head-on-collision/)

Not too surprising that the 62 did what it did. You could see the tremors of energy shuddering through the body work as the cars collided.

The 62 Caddy held up better physically than the 59 Chevy in that other test. Still not a great outcome for the driver, though.
