: How to upgrade to a nav head unit keeping your BOSE system.... 99 ETC

Preface: a sincere thanks to N*Caddy for verifying my connections were accurate and being available to answer my constant flux of questions. Vasi, you're the best. Invaluable. Electronics MVP on the forum award goes to you!

To recap, you want a nav system with a lot of modern features, but you love your BOSE system. It is simple to do but takes a little bit of work. The original Nav system was only available in the Seville and Deville and will NOT work on the stock BOSE Eldorado (without hardcore engineering like N*Caddy has pioneered), but you can get any NAV head unit of your choosing and instead of rewiring speakers and that mess, you can use the pre amplified BOSE system already in the car.

Here's what I used...

two GM 32-pin head unit connectors, male and female (1 each) with enough pins...
150 ft of quality wire, 18 gauge will work
RCA stereo cable, cut so that the audio wire component +,- of each Right (red) & Left (white) is available
The way it works is you plug in this new harness extension with audio inputs, into the factory connector the BOSE head unit connects to. The harness will extend to the trunk and pass behind the rear seat (10mm very deep socket, or wrench) along with a reverse signal wire and a video cable if you will have a rear view camera with your system (that's what I did).

Here are some pictures...

The connector with pins relocated matching wires (and pin-out map):

The connector (female) finished and taped...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/eldorado/photo3-14-1.jpg

The male end that attaches to the original factory head unit location, has the audio ins that feed the existing Radio Interface Module (RIM)...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/eldorado/photo2-18-1.jpg

The finished 16-17 ft extension harness...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/eldorado/photo1-14-1.jpg

The console all apart... use a plastic stereo removal tool and the FSM (factory service manual) diagrams for the bolt locations...

A Metra kit for Catera (if you want it to sit flush, all you need is the face plate, but you will need to carve some plastic out first, behind the stock head unit location, or the unit will stick out and you will need the kit for the Eldorado, it bulges).

The new extension.... installed
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/eldorado/photo5-5.jpg

So far this is the only different part, the rest is just installing a regualr stereo. Your steering wheel volume control will remain working and your new NAV will have amp out for a subwoofer as well as amp remote etc.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/photo1-14.jpg This is the "wrong" Metra face plate, the top screws almost match up perfectly with the Sony Nav as with the stock BOSE/delco HU.

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/photo2-18.jpg
Nice flush fit... (slightly different color/texture, but not a huge deal)

How bout with a Stock Denso Nav unit? Which is what im leaning towards doing so with. I want to be able to get my theft lock, bells, chimes, and steering wheel controls back.

The stock DENSO nav will not work on Eldorado--only on 2000+ Seville and Deville with some re-pinning. Read N*Caddy's post, he's still working on it, and it may take putting gutted equipment from a compatible donor car which may require dealer reprogramming as well. It's a work in progress.

BTW bells, chimes and steering volume controls still work with this setup bc they are in the original head unit which is still connected and controlling the RIM remotely from the trunk lol.

Here was my DHS with the proper metra face plate adapter (note how it is a closer match to the stock gray and it bulges)

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/dhs/IMG_0676.jpg

and here it is, same car, with the factory Denso unit. That thing on the right was an ipod controller. I had the aux mod with an audio/video switch hidden that could switch between bluetooth (separate) and HD Radio (also separate).

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/dhs/photo.jpg

This is the mod I made first, adding aux audio from the CD changer

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h267/mtflight/dhs/IMG_0388.jpg

As you can see, I started with a column shift DHS and added the console with Ranger's instructions...

What Nav unit is that?

mtflight
10-05-11, 09:40 PM
one is Denso (obvious just saying for other readers), the other is a Pioneer AVIC F90BT. It was easy to customize bc it was running Windows CE. Very capable, but it had MSN (which was discontinued) and was oh so slow... so slow. My new Sony boots in 10x less time, and I am not exaggerating at all.

The THEFTLOCK is printed in cardstock, to scale, so it fits over nav.

after reading this it makes me understand that next year when my latet navi disc is probably totaly outdated wich is from 2009 as it is
2011 now and 2012 next year
im going to add a aftermarket unit unless gm comes out with a new disc sometime
the unit i am thinking about is the Kenwood with the garmin or tom tom built into it for less parts

from what i understand the only way to retain the bose speakers is to put the Bose HU in the trunk
and i will also have a U1255 code if i don't put it in the trunk and just run new speakers all the way around ?

mtflight
10-05-11, 11:51 PM
Hey ThumperPup, the GMOS may work but for me it was too buggy (no U1255 to my knowledge... maybe though) I had it almost a year, then had it replaced upon AXXESS/metra's persistence then sold it on here.

That was the reason I sold the DENSO. I paid a pretty penny for it, and it looked outdated in graphics, and the maps were old and expensive to replace, no bluetooth no HD Radio, no text-to-speech, etc. I did like the look of it, off. lol

Honestly if I were you I'd sell it instead of relocating it in the trunk. Do you still have your factory radio or u sold that? You can just repin it or did you have a custom harness too?

I had a harness made from a Member on here
yes i have the Original radio still but only thing that works on it is the AM FM the cd player and tape player are shot don't work at all

I am actualy thinking maybe even replacing the speakers perhaps but then again id have to rewire it all

I just don;'t want to put the unit in the trunk maybe if there is room under the back seat perhaps but i use all my trunk space and i mean every inch of it lol

I like the style i am not into all the animated map stuff that they ahve on the newer units never liked them much

But i was thining about the Kenwood cause i can pick up one with the built in Navi i can get the Gmos-06 the steering where control retention harness and the gm antenna adapter all for about 700-800 dollars

But then if i get into replaacing speakers cause im not sure how the Bose speakers will sound with the Aftermarket unit im in another 300-400 for speakers i think

mtflight
10-06-11, 12:12 AM
as long as the head unit "Thinks" it's playing a tape or CD, this fix works. The App Radio is like $399 retail!

Regarding trunk space, I made two brackets from a thin flat aluminum sheet and it's going to be hanging in the rear shelf between the speakers (Eldo) with self tapping bolts (drill)... you don't lose trunk space and it's not going to be sliding around lol.

ThumperPup

My Orignal unit will not play a CD or Tape those stopped working long time before i swapped to the Navi unit

I think ill go with the GMOS-06 but i also want to keep My audio Controls on the wheel

mtflight
10-06-11, 12:40 AM
Does the original unit bump out of CD or Tape mode? or stays on CD/tape but no audio comes out? The first sucks and you're right it would not work, the 2nd scenario is ideal.

ThumperPup
10-06-11, 01:03 AM
it automaticaly eject tapes and cd after a few seconds is give me a error msg and ejects what ever was put in
and i don;'t want to have RCA audio quality anyway i want reall audio that is crisp

mtflight
10-06-11, 01:23 AM
yeah if it ejects it won't work. RCA quality is really good btw. Maybe you're thinking FM modulators--those are awful.

no not thinking that cause i have my iphone hooked up to the RCA's on the harness for the Navi
and the quality is better then FM transmitter but still sucks compared to getting it stright off a cd changer
i decided for now im going with the Isimple Unit ISGM73 i just ordered a new center speaker
my front Door Speakers are muffled
so i know they are bad need to repalce those
amazon has them on back order for 108 each or i can probalby get them from Chriss haven't checked his price yet but i know he is not usualy far off from GMPD and they have them for 140 each i think
or ebay has them new for 149 each
I might go used if Amazon doesn't get them back in this month or next month

I also decided i picked out the Kenwood 6180 unit thats what i want
and im going to use the GMOS-06 when i do get it and if that doesn't work then ill go from there

Here is mine after all is said and done i actually spent 2 weeks picking out the unit i wanted reading threw everything about 3 different units and decided on the Pioneer X930BT

reason i decided for this was cause it had everything and it had hardly any lag time all the reviews where perfect and it even streams audio threw Blue Tooth

i was thinking of 4 units
between the Pioneer X930BT wich was a go
there was also the Sony 770 and the reason i chose against Sony was they use TOM TOM and i was reading reviews of others getting terrible GPS service on that so decide against it

then there was the Clarion NX501 well as soon as i found out Clarion started to Mass Produce so they could supply to Best Buy recently i said screw that

also the Kenwood 7180 is really awesome but i can't live with the lag time its irritating so here is a picture all installed

used the PAC 0S2-GM32
chose not to instal the CM1 chime interface those damm chimes ignored the hell out of me LOL

I wonder if that Dash kit you used in this would fit in the 2000 Seville
I hate the dash kit from Metra that i got wich is this one it sucks

also how did you like the Sony was it a good unit ?
any problems with GPS Signal the reason i decided to go with the Pioneer instead of the Sony was cause i heard how it sometimes would get relaly bad GPS Reception and i didn't like that

mtflight
10-31-11, 06:46 PM
I ended out swapping the Sony for a Pioneer App Radio and using the difference to upgrade to iPhone 4s with Siri! So far really digging it, getting used to it. Regarding the face plate I used, yes it would work but you need to mod it. The OEM metal brackets that hold the BOSE HU to the climate controller actually fit the Pioneer unit (and did the Sony). So the Metra kit for the Catera works, except all you use is the face plate. You have to cut openings to fit the protrusions on the climate controller. This is where you get creative and create your own fit/degree of perfection because you're really creating a custom fit.

In summary... the original metal brackets FIT most aftermarket units (at least they fit both the Sony and the App Radio), and that holds the unit in place. The face plate you cut as needed and only use it to fill the gaps. That's what I did on the Sony and the AppRadio.

ThumperPup
10-31-11, 07:19 PM
I was thinking of the app radio but i decided against it cause i can see someone getting a data bill of like 200 a month if they don;'t have one of the old unlimited data plans not available anymore

did you take pictures of the Pioneer and Sony in the OEM bracket ?
i thought mine is Plastic the OEM bracket not metal i wonder if they changed it in the Seville perhaps

id like to see Pictures of how you used the OEM bracket housing if you have them
that would give me an idea of how to do it more

also so the only part of the Metra kit that you used was the Face Plate ?

I have a new unlimited data plan with the 4S on ATT. They're back.

I didn't take pictures of the OEM metal bracket, but it is a straight fit. I am not sure how the 98+ Seville works out though. Put them side by side and see if the holes match.

As far as the flat face Metra faceplate, yes just the face part. The plastic brackets weren't used.

hey on your app radio does it let you have access to the dial pad when on a phone call i mean like if your on a call and have to hit options or an extension does the dial pad show up to let you do that on the app radio
it does not on the Navigation units for pioneer and i think that sucks lol

I'm sure. The data plan is $30 a month and called the:
"Data Unlimited for iPhone 4S

Data Unlimited for iPhone 4S includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose. Includes unlimited Wi-Fi usage on the AT&T national Wi-Fi network."

hmm im going to call att and ask them cause i can't find it online anywhere
and i even whent threw to set up a new account with a Iphone 4S and its not giving me the option

how much data have you used so far with your app radio like if you had to calculate how much you would use in a month time
what would you think it would be
my bill started over again on the 29th and between the 29th and 1st i had used 295.3 Megabit i only have the 2gig plan and now this helps me to realize that even if i go to the 4gig plan i still have to cut down on Aha radio and Pandora wich are the only 2 things i use it for

mtflight

Im thinking of adding some headrest monitors i just wish someone made a replacement for ours but i guess ill just have to find some 7inch and have them installed into the headrest

I also am going to check around and see if it would be posible to have a monitor a really slim one installed in the front visors in place of the mirror

ThumperPup
11-23-11, 08:27 PM
am i missing something ?
from the looks of that it is not a nav unit atleast if it is i missed anywhere that is says it is its probably most likly at that price just a DVD unit

yeah it will work if you get the right harness or oif you wire you old HU threw the trunk
i think you would have to run the wires all the way to the HU in the front and then to the trunk you can't just use the RIM in the rear to hook up to the old HU

atleast this is if you have Bose
if you don't have bose then i don't think you need anything other then just the right adapter harness and dash kit

vincentm
11-23-11, 10:32 PM
My bad, yea that's not a nav unit, just looking for a double din touch screen with an SD card slot. I just want to pop in a card loaded with folders of music, I don't like fooling with auxiliary cables and fumbling with a quirky mp3 UI. I just want to select a folder and drive off. And for me it'd be best through a touch screen interface

ThumperPup
11-24-11, 05:36 PM
Yeah that will work for what you want aslong as it has the SD card slot i did not if it did or didn't but if it does then your cool

i know i stay away form brands that are like off named or something like that
you don't really see much of Boss i guess when they sell a unit for 199 but no one els carys that kind of unit for less then 400 there might be a reason but you might be lucky

i bought a PYLE unit years back and had nother but trouble with it
won't ever by a off brand or small brand i call them generic names

want a good system but want a cheap price
you can find them
get a JVC or Pioneer or Sony non navi dvd in dash unit you will be better off i feel

See how it is adjustable (tilts up and down, but can be fixed in place by tightening the screws). The face plate is just on to cover the gap and does not "mate" to the bracket in any way. I did have to drill a couple of holes on the bottom of the face plate (not visible because it is internal) to fit the climate control unit which has two horns and tabs.

Inadvertently, this has been done here http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-seville-cadillac-eldorado-forum/246884-2000-etc-factory-amplifer-location-validation.html

mtflight:

Would you be willing to help a fellow Cadillac member out in doing this? I'm not very mechanical inclined and radio shops around here want waaaaay to much money. If I build the harness, get all the required hardware, could you assist in the install?

I'm probably about 6 months out from possibly getting the headunit as I really like your setup.
