If I recall correctly, any newer Dexron fluid is compatible with older transmissions, but older fluid is not compatible with newer ones.

I believe they're on Dexron VI now.

A lot of people may not agree with this but in a pinch I decided to get the "universal" stuff that they sell at walmart...says "Compatible in all dexron and mercron transmissions" or whatever...never had a problem with it.

What sting said is right, any Dexron fluid (II or higher) will be fine.

Sounds well! Probably points were dirty or rusted after so many years not running. This car uses Dexron II, though as Stingroo says, Dexron III or IV is ok but III and IV are more expensive and they wont make this old transmission work better. Im sure you can find Dexron II at most autopart shops. It was used by every automatic car until 90s arrived. Check there is no leak. transmissions out of use for long time use to have seals or gaskets damaged.

Alright tranny works! Had to take the car for a ride up the street without a hood lol, anyways replaced valve pan cover gaskets today and thermostat for precautionary measures. Next up is door pins and frame paint any suggestions ?

If you're doing the frame, can't go wrong with POR-15.
