Besides inflation there would be slightly higher costs do to the newer redesigned 3.6. that alone would justify a slightly higher price over the old 3.0 version. Plus you must add to that the newer features and refinements such as the double insulated glass, heated steering wheel, added insulation and the new door looks added to the door panels etc etc. Mind you some of this is minor but certainly would justify some additional costs.
I drove both the turbo 2.8 and the 3.6 back to back, the important thing is where the torque is applied in the RPM range. The 3.6 is low in the RPM range so it feel a lot stronger. Go drive a 3.6 you will see how much better this engine works in the heavy car then the fast spinning 2.8, you will be very suprised at the low level of effort the 3.6 takes to do the same job.
Not to sound like a broken record but the '12 SRX feels about as fast as my '09 SRX V8 and that car had 50 lb ft. more tq. than the '12.
GM did a REALLY good job with the new motor. It is noticeably stronger, quicker revving and smoother than the previous 3.6Ls.
max tq. comes on over 2000 rpms than the old V6 and I would imagine that the tq is flatter also.
There are starting to be a few Camaros with the 3.6L LFX on the streets and they are saying it pulls really well. Of course it is almost 600lbs lighter also.
The max torque is very low on the rpm range. The 2.8 is around 1850 rpm, and the 3.6 is around 2400 rpm. Maximum horsepower is high on the rpm range (2.8 max HP @ around 5500, 3.6 max HP @ around 6800).
I agree it is suppose to help you out better for extra MPGs when you are in highway driving mode.
However, I have left mine on since I bought it and I have never turned it off yet. With it on the 3.6L still pulls tremendous torque and power ... hmmm I will have to do some spirited driving with it on and off to compare the difference.
