: 2006 Catalyctic problems

We have been told by a GM dealer that both of the converters on our 2006 STS 4.6 V8 have failed and need to be replaced. According to the Federal Emission Control System Warranty, these should be covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles. My dealer tells me my car does not qualify because it has a rebuilt title on it. What does that have to do with an EPA mandated warranty???? It's bull crap. Is there anybody out there who can help me with this? I have been quoted a $1500 price for repairs that should be covered under federal warranty!:mad2:

Rebuilt means the car was totaled and has a rebuilt/salvage title on it. That means no warranty on anything. No dealership (Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM) have warranties or extended warranties on rebuilt/salvage title

That's the price you pay when you get a rebuilt/salvage title, and that's another reason why those cars go for a lot less.

I would try going to a muffler shop and seeing the price to get the replaced. I'm sure they wouldn't charge half that much.

I know what rebuilt means. I have owned several wrecked, rebuilt vehicles. My husband has a auto body repair shop so it is much cheaper for us to own cars that way. We have had good luck and virtually no problems until now. I understand the GM warranty does not apply to the vehicle, but this is not GM mandated. It is a Federal EPA mandated warranty on ALL converters. It should apply to our vehicle as well.

Once a car is totaled, all warranties are null & void.

I wasn't trying to be mean or insinuate you don't know what the meaning of rebuilt was and I'm sorry if I came off that way. Once the original title is voided, all warranties become null and void, that includes anything mandated by the EPA/government/etc. as well.

Like Judge Milian says, "The cheap comes out expensive". Be aware of the pitfalls of salvage titles. As you deal in cars with salvage titles it looks like you got hoist by your own petard.

I wrote a letter to the Cadillac Assistance office last week regarding this issue with our car. I received a call from them today. The gentleman I spoke with indicated to me that our converters should have been covered under the EPA warranty and that our dealer should have known that. He is going to contact our dealer and then get back with me. We paid $1700.00 for these repairs. If I can get my money back, I will be extremely happy!
Unless he dosen't know what he is talking about.....it may just happen!

did they know that you have a branded/salvage/rebuilt title ... different states have different names for it

also, it's possible that the previous poster was wrong and that the federal emissions warranty is valid on these kinds of cars

Yes....I explained in my letter that the car has been rebuilt and has a rebuilt title....that's what they call it in Kentucky. The person that I spoke with in the Cadillac assistance department indicated to me that our converters should have still be covered under the Federal EPA warranty, which is seperate from GM warranty. He called the dealer and spoke with them Friday. I am supposed to speak with their catalyctic converter specialist tomorrow. Wish me luck!

ok well that's a bit of good news then... i would expect Cadillac Customer Assistance to straighten your dealer out and get them to honor the warranty

Except she says it in Spanish!! I love Judge Milian!! My favorite saying of hers is "I wouldn't believe a word out of your mouth if your tongue came notarized!!" :lies:
