: Blown rear diff I think, now what?

Accelerated hard from a stop, slightly wet out, got bad wheelhop quickly, pop followed by grinding/clanking metal noise from drivers side rear, no obvious oil leakage, little if any power to rear wheels.

New to V's, but forum research leads me to think it may be the rear diff or possibly cv joint if i am lucky.

If its a diff, what the cheapest replacement option? Link?
Good time to do wheelhop fix too?

Will give more info tomorrow once it gets to a garage.

Thanks,

Could be the spline on the axle inside the diff.

If it's the diff, you can chase down a used one on eBay (with its inherent risk) or get a new one from Luke at Lindsay Cadillac. Luke is the cheapest when you consider shipping costs ... see ad at right of screen.

If it is a diff problem. Post up, a bunch of us have spares sitting on a shelf for a just in case situation. I'm one of them.

If you need one, just ask and someone might be willing to sell theirs.

Thanks guys! I like this forum community after coming from NASIOC, smaller but more friendly and helpful.

So great news. It was the CV joint and axle! Now that I have been terrified by the wheelhop gods I would like to get an anti-wheel hop kit!

1. Is Gforce the best anti-wheel hop kit?
2. Should I get the one or two axle kit?
3. Where do I get a CV joint?

Thanks,

As far as axles go, I'd personally get two especially if you're prone to aggressive launches. Gforce or Hendrix both seem to work well.

Awesome! Thanks. Does the Hendriz kit come with cv's because gforce's does not.

or... just take one for the team and never worry about it again with a real diff but then again thats a serious investment.

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using TapatalkNot sure what he's charging these days. IIRC, he got me for $1.6k. Might be more, might be less now. You'll have to give 'im a call.

this is just my opinion, but there is no CURE for wheelhop. There are all kinds of stuff you can spend your money on to help reduce it, but it's impossible to eliminate it completely.

I had pro axles, FG2 and all season tires, and I still got a little hop.

I think it's definitely possible to reduce it, and have seen several V1s in person that have absolutely NO wheel-hop.

The problem is that a solution is often custom, and frequently costs several thousand $

I have ordered a Hendrix Engineering 1000 hp anti-wheel hop kit for the drivers side. I will report in on how effective it is at dealing with wheel hop.

I'm selling the 1000hp version in the classifieds. Same one's in Randy's pic.....I just lowered the price too!! (shameless plug)

These you don't have to use any of the oem parts and snap those too.

Somebody should jump on Shane's axles (plural so as not to be confused with his ... er, lone "axle"). Not sure what he's got them priced at, but I can tell you they work GREAT!

many people try to get rid of wheel hop by focusing just on the area of the symptom (axles, suspension) but the problem lies anywhere energy can be built up, and then release, like a bounce from a spring.
$hit rolls down hill, and that's true with the V1, a lot of sprung energy builds up in the (stock) motor mounts. many discover to their surprise wheel hop is drastically reduced and for some totally eliminated by switching to stiffer mounts (CS Ultra in my case). just my .02

So, I am not sure how the dealership (Colonial Buick GMC, in Watertown, Ma.) missed this, but my rear differential did snap.

The rear diff may be fine, but the transfer case (right name?) portion that holds it on broke clean away on the drivers side. See images below:

http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/4412/reardiff.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/585/reardiff.jpg/)
This is where it broke.

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/3296/brokendiff.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/692/brokendiff.jpg/)
Here is the break.

Can I just replace the transfer case (I think that's what you call it)?
Should I replace the entire rear diff?
Does any one have a used one they can sell?

In case you were curious, here is the popped CV:
http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/6384/rearcv.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/690/rearcv.jpg/)

Again, I have purchased a Hendrix Axle, but now need the rear diff or at least the part that I broke. This is my daily driver so any help advice or help (anyone want to sell a rear diff I REALLY need one asap) is appreciated!

Thanks,

since you asked, it's not called a transfer case, it's called the carrier.

And I think you will have to buy a whole new one. They were never made available otherwise. If you buy a used one whose housing is intact, chances are, all the innards will be as well.

Thanks, Jimmy. A new diff it is.

Who wants to clean out their garage and sell me one?;)

I've got a brand new rear end on the shelf but it is a bit of a wierdo. It has an open posi in it with upgraded springs and corvette clutch packs and my original 3.73 gears by RPM Transmissions. If your posi is still good you might be able to swap the parts around.

Dang, just bought a gen 4 rear diff. Otherwise I would be on that like white on rice!
