View Full Version : Superchip VS Timing advance What are some of your opinions...Superchip or Timing advance?
Also, if I were to get a Superchip (Which I will sometime) would that itself adjust the timing? Or would it still be benificial to manually adjust it.
Dustin caddydaddy 10-21-04, 09:47 AM The superchip, and other chips also adjust the fuel timing and amounts. And yes, most do advance the timing, thus requiring in most the use of premium fuel. illumina 10-21-04, 01:24 PM i purchased the superchip a couple of months ago...and it still cant get it to work right!
personally, i feel i wasted 200 dollars on the POS! Illumina,
I read about your issues in a previous post. I can't beleive the chip is doing anything it is supposed to. Maybe the Chip received a Electro-static shock or something. It seems you have tried anything you could think of. Give the company a call and see what they have to say. BeelzeBob 10-21-04, 11:15 PM Just try the timing advance. It only takes a few minutes so what is the harm... The timing map is a bit conservative in the 4.9 since it doesn't have a knock sensor. Bump the timing up 3-4 degees (set it at 13 or 14 instead of 10 as specified) and use premium fuel. There is no more power in the spark cal. And the fueling cal is correct also. No more power possible in a "chip" although the aftermarket chip could get rid of the speed limiter if that is a concern to you. It won't make any more power than the timing advance, though. BTW...the aftermarket chips will also require you to run premium as they just bump the advance up in the chip instead of retiming the distributor. Night Wolf 10-22-04, 12:57 AM we brought my timing up to 13 or so...
...something strange, when the timing light was on it, the timing mark on the pully was jumping around like crazy... and also, when I jumped the pins on the ALDL connector, the car went into the factory mode, but it never set set timing or whatever it is supposed to display on the FDC...
... I am getting the Fast Chip next year... Ed Wright, $160... it'll remove the 110mph speed limiter... I honestly want to see what the 4.9 will do... plus I don't like the idea of having hte top speed on my car limited... if i will go that fast or not... CadiJeff 10-22-04, 02:00 AM bbob did any of you crazy cadi engineers ever try to find out how fast an unlimited 4.9 would go? I remember reading that you guys tried it w/ a 93 alante w/northstar and got over 160mph. :D
just curious Night Wolf 10-22-04, 10:30 PM '93 Allante hit 160+?
that "only" had the 270hp version... I guess it was aerodynamics?
IIRC, I heard that the stock 4.9 could push the car to 125-130.... once it hits overdrive 4th, it is out of the power band and geared too high to go further...
...honeslty, if my '93 hit 130, I would treuly be happy.... that is not bad at all for the 4.9 considering what it is... high-torque, low-rpm pushrod engine... Edahall 10-23-04, 02:33 AM The 1993 Allante had 295 HP. Night Wolf 10-23-04, 02:10 PM are you sure?
for some reason I thought they had 270.... Edahall 10-23-04, 09:19 PM are you sure?
for some reason I thought they had 270....
According to the following link, the 1993 Allante had a measly 295 horsepower

:D
- same hp as my NorthStar.... in it's stock form... in 50 pieces right now... CadiJeff 10-24-04, 12:19 AM from http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13773&highlight=speed+allante+tape
172 MPH in an STS.....hmmmm.....must have pushed it off a cliff.
There was no speed limiter on the Z tire cars that I know of....but they would struggle to run 148 on a flat level road with no wind. Given a steep down hill and/or tailwind I would believe 150-155 but 172....?????.....that MUST have been a typo.
The aero and tire loads get so tremendous at speeds of 145-150 that it takes a LOT (and I mean a LOT) of HP to go much faster. MUCH more HP than a stock Northstar has.
The fastest that I have ever seen on a "straight and level" road with no wind was 163 on a 93 Allante that was EXTENSIVELY mod'd with duct tape on all the seams, grill duct taped shut almost, a huge chin spoiler that scraped the road, open exhuast system, etc..... the mice were at play when the cat was away....LOL. 172 in an STS is a LONG LONG ways from that. | |
