: Shark Fin Antenna (Update)

Hello again,
I have been in contact with a vendor and he assures me that there shark fin antenna will work with my 2011 SRX. This reply was to my sending numerous pictures of my SRX antenna with measurements and specifications to the vendor. As you can see from the reply below, the vendor assures that the XM/Onstar/GPS signals will not be interfered with but, AM/FM station reception may be reduced. As I never listen to AM/FM anymore I don't see this as major issue. The vendor will color match the Shark Fin Antenna to my SRX color (Platinum Ice Metallic). I will let everyone know just how this turns out as I just placed my order a few minutes ago. Pricing is $69 plus $12 for shipping. See below
Hi Bob,

Thank you for your email.

Our pre-released Mark II VG shark fin antenna is compatible with your 2011 Cadillac SRX. For more information, pictures and how to order, please see the email below.

Regards,
Arthur

---------------------------------------
This new shark fin antenna was developed specifically for vehicles that have an AM/FM rear-roof whip antenna and a Sirius/XM/OnStar/GPS chip-set antenna integrated into the larger antenna base. Our Mark II antenna will allow you to replace the whip portion of your AM/FM antenna and cover the entire large antenna base on your roof to give it a clean look. Installing this antenna will not hinder the operation of your Sirius/XM/OnStar/GPS chip-set antennas that are integrated into your antenna base, however, it may be possible to notice a slight drop in reception in AM/FM especially when listening to stations that are located further away or stations that have weaker signals.

Well, what do you know. There's a vendor out there for almost anything. Personally, I don't have a need for this, but I'm curious to see what it looks like.

I have wondered why suvs have the larger antenna stalks when cars do not. The antenna stalk on my Enclave is huge. I didn't realize it was the fm antenna. I just assumed it had the fm antenna on the rear window like sedans do.

I dont think the antenna stalk on my Enclave is removable like the above photo. It is just like a shark fin antenna, but there is an 8" or so antenna stalk molded on.

Here is a picture of my current antenna. The black mast unscrews from the white base. The Shark Fin will cover the existing base and has a cable which screws into the base where the current mast is attached. I will post pictures as soon as I get the new antenna mounted and post on reception function.

Be sure to keep us posted on how well it works, and a picture of how it looks. That fish pole antenna on the cars now is magnet for my cat. He chewed the end off my OnStar antenna on my HHR. Fortunately the mast was replaceable, common, and I got a used one for $10. I have been think about a stubby for the Cadillac, but that Shark find looks nice in your picture.

Update as of 08/08/11.
I received my Shark Fin Antenna from VG and I must say they did an awesome job color matching my Platinum Ice Metallic Paint. The product is constructed very well and is simple to install. As for radio reception, I can say that I lost some reception on my AM frequency but, FM and XM both seem nearly the same as before. Overall, I am very satisfied with the product and really like the look. Most importantly, this antenna allows me to park my SRX under the 4 post lift without having to take the antenna off to park. Here are some photos I took with the phone after the install.

Actually, you cover the factory base with the new Shark Fin Antenna. As I understand it the factory base has the XM antenna in it and the new antenna is used for AM/FM. There is a wire that you attach with a screw to the base unit on the new Shark Fin Antenna. This wire is the new antenna as I understand it and is molded into the Shark Fin Antenna on the side and serves as the antenna portion. So far zero complaints from me to this addition.

I only use XM, so no. They say themselves it will reduce long range AM/FM, and that is all. Non interfering otherwise.

TN 2011 SRX
05-28-12, 07:43 AM
I have the shark fin and my experience has been that there is np difference in xm. Very little difference in FM. AM seems to be the band that was most affected. That is my experience with almost a year of use. This was the best modification I have done for my SRX, in my opinion.

Kaptain Spaulding

Hi. Wondering if you have had any issues with the front of the fin slightly rising up. I installed one of these a couple of days ago and have had a small issue with it. Just curious. Thanks.

TheCaptain
06-06-12, 05:47 PM
Yea, it looks like the front of the fin isn't as flush as the rear of the fin, according to the body line, but no matter how much compression i put on it, it just goes back to what it was. It must have something to do with how the foam comes around the point there and lifts it a bit. Not like its coming off though, no fear of that!

I have been in contact with them and they are sending me a slightly thicker gasket. I may or may not use it. Seems like a lot of work to get the current one off without ruining my paint. We will see.

After seeing the Shark Fin on the Captain's two SRXs, and a few others, I purchased one for my wife's 2012 SRX. The mocha steel paint match was perfect and the antenna works great. Don't use AM much, but FM and XM work great.

Really pleased and easy to install and arrived in about a week or so. My garage is small and the antenna was hitting the garage door opener motor. I installed it on my 2011 SRX (Gray Flannel). Unfortunately, the photos are too large to upload but I think it makes the vehicle look better and it was a good paint match. I would recommend the product.

I don't like to criticize anyone's personal preference, but if you had a sharkfin you would definitely notice the roofline more, especially on the SRXs that don't have one. And if your desire for the best reception were entirely true, you would have a 10 or 20 foot antenna!

I've recently started selling the Cadillac brand here in Houston, and I have customers asking for this fin. I'm so surprised that our dealership doesn't have a vendor linked to this... beautiful attribute to the SRX lines.

I ordered my Shark fin antenna yesterday and I can't wait for it to arrive. There is a 2 week production period on it and looks like it is coming from Canada so with this crazy winter weather it might take a little longer but we will see.

I think the sleek look of the shark fin antenna compliments the lines of the car nicely.

I was reading the 2013 Cadillac Navigation Infotainment guide and came across the below info on page 22. Looks like the AM/FM portion of the antenna is integrated in the backglass and the staff and base of the antenna attached to the roof is actually for OnStar, Sirus and GPS only.

Within this thread it was stated that there was some slight noticeable decrease in signal within the AM channel but I wouldn't believe this shark fin antenna would have any impact to the AM/FM signal since that antenna is in the back window.

Has anyone noticed a decrease in performance or signal with OnStar, GPS or Sirius that has installed this shark fin antenna?

Backglass Antenna

The AM-FM antenna is integrated
with the rear window defogger in the
rear window. Do not scratch the
inside surface or damage the lines
in the glass. If the inside surface is
damaged, it could interfere with
radio reception. For proper radio
reception, the antenna connector
needs to be properly attached to the
post on the glass.
If attaching a cell phone antenna to
the glass, attach it between the grid
lines.

Notice: Using a razor blade or
sharp object to clear the inside
rear window can damage the rear
window antenna and/or the rear
window defogger. Repairs would
not be covered by the vehicle
warranty. Do not clear the inside
rear window with sharp objects.
Notice: Do not apply aftermarket
glass tinting with metallic film.
The metallic film in some tinting
materials will interfere with or
distort the incoming radio
reception. Any damage caused to
the backglass antenna due to
metallic tinting materials will not
be covered by the vehicle
warranty.

Multi-Band Antenna

The roof antenna is for OnStar,
SiriusXM® Satellite Radio (US and
Canada only), and GPS (Global
Positioning System). Keep clear of
obstructions for clear reception.
If the vehicle has a sunroof, and it is
open, reception can also be
affected.

I received my shark fin antenna on Friday and installed it on Saturday. It was a very easy install and a perfect paint match to my Raven Black color. I love the look much better than the staff antenna. It definitely goes with the lines of the vehicle much better. It surprises me that this antenna isn't on the vehicle from the start given how much detail was put in the styling of the SRX to begin with.

I am definitely happy with this modification and I can't wait for my LED fog light Bezel to come in now. :-)

Thanks Zwiefela and Tup. This was a really easy install and makes a big difference in the overall look of the vehicle.

The shark fin antenna cost me $85 usd. It comes from a Canadian company. They make them to order so production time is about two weeks before shipping. They kept me informed via email throughout the process so I would definitely recommend them.

Tup, I don't blame you needing a break from the Canadian winter. It is hard to beat the Florida weather this time of year. I have lived my whole life here and have only seen snow 3 times. How is the reception?

I haven't experienced any issue. I have listened to FM and Sirius so far and all sounds just as good as it did before. From a previous post that I did, the FM/AM antenna is integrated into the back window and the staff antenna is primarily used for OnStar, GPS and Satellite. Here is the info from the 2013 Cadillac Infotainment guide.

Backglass Antenna

The AM-FM antenna is integrated
with the rear window defogger in the
rear window. Do not scratch the
inside surface or damage the lines
in the glass. If the inside surface is
damaged, it could interfere with
radio reception. For proper radio

post on the glass.
If attaching a cell phone antenna to

Notice: Using a razor blade or
sharp object to clear the inside
rear window can damage the rear
window antenna and/or the rear
window defogger. Repairs would
not be covered by the vehicle
warranty. Do not clear the inside
rear window with sharp objects.
Notice: Do not apply aftermarket
glass tinting with metallic film.
The metallic film in some tinting
materials will interfere with or
distort the incoming radio
reception. Any damage caused to
the backglass antenna due to
metallic tinting materials will not
be covered by the vehicle
warranty.

Multi-Band Antenna

obstructions for clear reception.
If the vehicle has a sunroof, and it is

Max

There is a slight dip in the roof about three inches or so in front of the base of the existing antenna mount. When you remove the staff and place the shark fin antenna over top of the existing base you just need to make sure the front of the shark fin antenna is just behind that dip in the roof so that the shark fin antenna has a complete level seal. I am not noticing any lifting or separation in the front of the shark fin antenna but then again i just installed it so I am not sure if the lifting comes with time or not. I know that I made it a point to mount the antenna just behind the dip in the roof so the seal of the antenna would be completely level around the entire antenna. The instructions that came with the antenna indicated to seat the front of the antenna an apply pressure for a minute and then seat the back of the antenna and apply pressure for another minute and that is what I did. I have been periodically checking the front of the antenna to see if there has been any lifting since I installed in on Saturday but so far there hasn't been. I did read that some people are seeing some lifting in the front. I plan on keeping an eye on it and if it starts I will update this thread.

Same here. Before I did the install I attached the antenna lead to insure it was working rather than find out after the fact. XM, GPS and OnStar all work as before (as best as I can tell without a signal strength meter). AM & FM antenna is in the back glass so I didn't expect any issues there and there were none.
