: New "V" owner says Hello!

Hello everyone!
I have been creeping in here for months after deciding I had outgrown the WRX-STI I have wanted for years. Probably one of thetoughest things I have done in a while was admit to myself that I am just not young enough for the "ricer" STI, which will always have a special place in my fantasy garadge, anymore. What I realize now is that I am finally mature enough ( I hope) to own a car as fantastic as the one in my driveway.
So my day started off pretty bad with a project at work going south (got it back in line). It ended great since I got to drive home my new 2007 Light Platinum / Ebony CTS-V. Bone stock, the windows aren't even tinted yet, with 7103 miles on it. What a car. I will take some pictures this week end to post up while we are taming the Dragon (Hwy 129). I so happy to have this ride as my own and realy felt bad for the seller who had only had the car for 10 months, a new baby was forcing the sale on his end. 7103 miles and only 78 miles from my house on Autotrader, it was meant to be.
No mods are planned for the near future other then some tint for the windows, some rubber dust in the rear finder wheels and gas in the tank. The sikney peday is very new and needs breaking in.
Hello all and I am happy to be a part of the clan.

welcome to the forums

I think you will find a drastically different dynamic between the horribly-understeering STi and the tail-happy V. I imagine you will also miss being able to launch the car, but the V makes up for these deficiencies in wonderful ways.

Jimmy, I have never had the pleasure of launching the STI. I will at this point in life never own one unless I win the lottery and have a stable one day. We can always dream right?
I already love the tail happy V, it rained today so no room to play but it did step out a bit on a spirited run down a a clover leaf on ramp (all driving aids on). So for the run this week end up and down the Dragon I think I should stick with "competitive mode". Do you guys turn off stability for spirited driving?

Sorry, I thought you meant you had an STi before the V.

Most guys go into comp mode for most driving. I always left it all on. I didn't have the courage to turn it off. Then again, I spun out twice even in full nanny mode.

After 5 days of ownership, 5 tanks of gas and 800 miles. I know I have made the right choice. Me and my wife spent all week end driving through Tennessee, N.C. and N.Ga Smokey Mountains. WE managed to make it to the top of the Dragon on Hwy 129 without getting a ticket or running over a Harley. The all but new Caddy drew a crowd at the top with guys getting out of riced out Mitsubishi to get pictures of my classy ride. Harley riders were full of questions and pride as everyone wanted to know about it. "Is that thing a stick?", 'What size motor"?
From there we went back down the hill and hit Moonshiner 28 towards Cherokee... 28 is a blast. Not near as tight as 129 but much faster. I was still being responsible but may have bumped over the limit on a few corners. We made our way to the Casino where I dropped it with the Valet. Hours later when I called for the car, you would have thought I was driving the freaking space shuttle. It would seam it was the 1st V the young valet had ever seen and he was in love. I quickly explained that the car and I where honeymooning and snatched my keys back. Crashed in a Hotel down the road and headed out the following morning back into Ga through the Nanatahala Gorge into Blue Ridge. What a great weekend in a fantastic car. Can waite till my next drive.

Welcome! With only 7,103 miles, you sure made a great purchase.

As far as "finally being mature enough," I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about.

Nice. I'll have to make the trip up there with mine soon enough.

I went up to Hayesville in the woman's SAAB 97x AERO (LS2) towing a trailer with furniture to a family friend up there. Tore through 129 until the road was choked off by SLOW motorcycles on the way back. Really, who the eff rides a TRIKE through the mountains at 30mph. I rode the brakes the whole damn time. Ruined my experience. I should have pulled off and waited.

We'll have to get a group of V's up there this fall.

Congrats on the new V and welcome to the forum. 07 platinum/ebony FTW! It's the fastest color by far. The 'light' platinum paint they use is the 'lightest' of all the all... scientifically proven weight advantage gives us the edge. Everyone knows it. The naysayers are just jealous haters.... much like the ls6 guys in denial. :)

Thanks guys. I do have some pictures that I need to re-size so I can get them posted. Set my Flip up in the back with a a tripod and got some video, watching the video reminds me of playing GT5, watching the navi like a coarse map heading into the next series of corners. 318 turns takes more than a few runs to remember. I am up for a trip this fall when the leaves are changing.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.I ran with a friend of mine, me in my '09 V and him in his C5 Vette. We each did a run with his GoPro. Only problem is the runs look slower than they were running the mount high on the windshield. We should've had them on the driver's side door or fender...

Rand49er the stance of your car looks great. I PMed you a few questions about it. I am new here but even I know the LS2 is faster then the 6... black center caps or not.

LS2 has better low end, which is better for the V than the LS6. But the LS6 still has the hotter cam from the factory.

The LS6 is more exotic, more rare and not whored out to every other GM offering.

Do we want to see if we can flesh this out? Should we start a new thread? I can invite some friends and show up with a mix as well: 911, Vet, Skyline? Even if they all bail, I will drive up.... I propose we run Cherohala Skyway and Dragon Loop 120 miles of pure pleasure. Where can we meet? I would like to run the whole loop with several runs of the Dragon.

Welcome to the forums!!! So youre from Atlanta? That where I got my 07 Light Platinum V back in March. Mine has a few more miles on it but it also had the moonroof delete which was important to me since I'm tall. It was a pleasure getting to know her over the course of the 600 mile drive home to Indiana. Have you put together a mod list yet? I highly recommend a short shifter, standard CTS center console, and most importantly MUFFLER DELETE. If you think youre getting attention now, imagine how much you'll get when your car SCREAMS every time you get on it.

I've never run the dragon but have heard about it a lot so if you guys put together a meet let me know and I'll be there.

Driftwood420

Mod list yes, is the wife buying into it? Not yet. Got a few big deals on the table, all I need is one to go good. I would like too hear your car you close?
Tint, V1, anti-hop axle fix, CAI, iphone cable would be cool. Never emptying gas tank!

Tint and antihop axles are on my list too. FYI CAI wont gain you much unless youre running forced induction. Definately get the CAGS eliminator if you dont have it already, that skip shift can be quite annoying. And be careful about the "always emptying gas tank". Many people have found that the gas gauge gets a little unpredictable towards the bottom of the tank. I got stranded once in the street right in front of the gas station because I tried to stretch it too far. You dont realize just how heavy that car is until youre trying to push it by yourself. I recommend gassing up the moment the needle hits the 1/8th mark to prevent any "surprises". As for hearing my exhaust, you'll probably have to wait for a "dragon meet" as I live up in Indiana. However if you find yourself in the area though let me know and we can meet up.

Actually, I wouldn't run a Tail meet with a large group. Too many people hitting fast corners in a line spells disaster. Plus, large groups grab more attention. I thought it was perfect with just my friend in a C5 and myself.

Tail of the Dragon is pretty fun. I'm a big fan of the Blue Ridge Parkway, even at its slower speeds. The Cherohala Skyway is just like it but with higher speed limits and less traffic. We got some really high speeds on some sections thurr...

Good point.

I'll be up there the 27th and 28th most likely. It'd at least be nice to meet a couple folks and we wouldn't necessarily have to have a speed session all at once. Just getting up there could be fun enough individually.

Represent our community well and STAY IN YOUR LANE! There is no reason to drive all the way out there to try and "straighten" the road by cutting lanes/corners and you could kill someone. Have fun and give us a report of the trip.

I'm in the Asheville area now. Ran the Dragon I think 4 full times between yesterday and today. I can post more comments in another thread that I may create at some point but for now I'll say thank god for the FG2 shocks and Michelin PSS tires. The HPS pads did better than expected. Enough to turn the front calipers gold! I really pushed it, and ended up in Competitive Driving mode as the standard mode was too limiting based on how hard I was driving. Even did respectably against my cousin's Elise. But going from the Elise to the CTS-V is just crazy how different they feel. So different that I was driving poorly for the first few corners after running the Dragon with the Elise. But this car really holds its own...love it. No mechanical issues despite really wringing it out @ 107k. 9 MPG on a tank with some highway before the Dragon, then 7 MPG on the DIC after pure Dragon runs. 1.26 and 1.17 on the G meter.

Driftwood420
08-27-11, 02:14 PM
1.26 and 1.17 NICE, only way i have come close to that is stepping it out to far in competitive mode and nanny stepping and telling me to chill. Glad to hear you had a safe trip.

thebigjimsho
08-27-11, 07:28 PM
You can get much higher g readings on the tail than many road courses as most of the tighter turns have severe positive camber. And if anyone wants to, you can buy GoPro cameras at the bike resort shop on the south edge of the Tail...

Just got back tonight. Didn't push it nearly as far as Kev did... only managed .89 on the G meter, but I wasn't really going for any records. Ran with both nannies on during all runs sat and sun. Only had stability kick in a couple times. My avg mpg actually went up from my normal daily avg. I kept it in 3rd pretty much the whole time in the twisties. I didn't work the brakes too hard either. I guess having the GF in the car slowed me down a bit. Still a blast though. First run through was pure exhilaration. Lots of looks and compliments too. Bikers love blacked out caddies.
