1988 Eldorado 4.5L Wanted to install a new oil pan gasket to take care of an oil leak. I drained the oil and loosened the oil pan. First problem was that I couldn't get it past the exhasut pipe, so I removed the exhaust pipe.
Now I still can't remove the pan, because it is stuck under part of the frame.
Is there any trick to get that thing out?
I have gotten so far that I can't screw the pan back on without installing a new gasket.
Please Help!
Thanks,
Mark

Try turning the crank...the pan may be hanging up on one of the counterweights. You may also have to loosen the engine mounts and lift the engine slightly with a floor jack or something to gain some more room but in all likelyhood it is just the pan hitting one of the counterweights so turn it and keep trying.
Can't find the bolt at the end of the harmonic damper to attach my socket to.
Will it be fine to crank the starter a couple times until it stops at the right position, or is it a problem because I don't have any oil in the engine?

CRANK THE ENGINE WITH THE OIL PAN LOOSE AND POSSIBLY CATCHING ON THE CRANK...????
LOL LOL LOL LOL
NO.
It is NOT a good idea to crank the engine. Keep looking for the nut on the damper to turn the motor...or use a screw driver on the flex plate teeth....or turn it with the nut on the generator. Anywthing.....BUT DON'T USE THE STARTER.
You should have disconnected the battery negative cable anyway before you started working on the engine so cranking would be impossible. If you haven't disconnected it , do it now so that nothing accidently shorts or causes a short circuit... Hint: you are working right beside the starter with a huge battery cable going to it that could cause MAJOR problems if you accidently touch one edge of the oil pan to that terminal or hit it with a wrench. You will learn more about arc welding than you wanted....
Don't use the starter.
