I finally got the vinyl top off an all that foam type stuff but i am having trouble getting the glue off. What could i do to get it gone and now i am looking for a good quality paint job an how would it look if i decidded not to put a vinyl top back on an just make it a hard top??? And the vinyl around the back window it looks like it has a plate on it but i will upload photos tomorrow. an I am kind of on a budget because work is slow.....

You can remove the rear window housing and install the glass from an '80-'84 Sedan de Ville; they didn't use the formal roof.

This is what it would look like:

Man, I really want to get rid of my top. Most people will use a DA sander to get the glue off and the top prepped.

Do you think it would look goofy with no vinyl top and the same rear window?

^It would look bad if you uncovered it and didn't do anything to hide the window housing. But you might be able to mask the window housing with sheet metal and not have the welds look too apparent.

Cool. I was just wondering as I've never pulled the v top off and didn't know how oogly it is under there. Maybe some day I will get brave enough to do it because mine has a couple little cuts on top and some rust on the sides bubbling...hehe.

Hopefully the dude will take pictures of the back window...

So, behind the back vinyl, whats there? Looks like a panel is screwed in or something. How did you peel it off? did you use a hairdryer?

It is like a metalsheet that the glass in in and the vinyl is like glued to the metal. but to get the vinyl off of it is easy it just peels off but to get the them both offf there are little screws around there that require stars to get off.

So it has glass all the way to the edges of the roof?

the vinyl roof rear glass is full length side to side (looks like a non vinyl window with a smaller defroster and black applique around the window), so the metal sheet should just be covering the glass (maybe screwed in to where the chrome trim around the window was on non vinyl rood models) if you remove the interior formal window trim (not recommended because replacement clips for the formal roof trim arent available) you will see the glass goes side to side and top to bottom.

look at this pic you see how you see the black metal first then the glass off to the left. It is like the window doesn't take up all the space so the metal acts as a fillerthink of it as a inground pool. the inside is the glass and the metal is the area of the pool.

That pic wont load on my phone but what I'm really trying to say is would the back window need to be replaced or would I just need to get the trim from a non-vinyl top?

Kevin, I just changed that interior trim but forgot to look. Are you sure the window is full length.

ok so with that I wouldnt be able to do what sven914 said about just putting a rear window from a 80'-84' sedan de'ville????

the rear window actually does take up the whole room under the steel plate except for maybe an inch or so on each side where the metal plate is covering the body of the car. I've seen the vinyl roof window from the inside and it is a very large rear window. I was expecting a window only slightly larger than the area shown, but surprise! full size rear window.

you should be able to do that (window swap). the windows themselves are the same size. the vinyl roof window is a modified 80-84 window (smaller rear defroster and black applique) the glass itself though is the exact same size.

Ok But with out the metal plate things the window wouldn't stay in place???? Because could I just prime down the metal and paint right over it????

cadillac kevin

the metal plate is cosmetic. its only purpose is to give the vinyl roof something to attach to (vinyl wouldnt stick well to glass). it does not hold the window in place.

He would still need a new piece of widow glass, right? I don't think you can redo the defroster wires.

Right because if I can just take off the metal an keep on rockin I will do so.

And how should i go about covering up the rust spots and prepping for paint. I am fairly new to this all so sorry if it seems like i am asking retorical ?'s.

It sounds like the glass already is the same as the non vinyl roof cars and all they did was put that plate there to make it look smaller. If that's what's actually going on you should either be able to finish off that plate properly and paint over it or take it off and do whatever you have to to put the chrome trim there. It's probably not finished and doesn't have the nail heads for the clips tho.

Youd have to fix the rust the same as any other rust and you'd probably have to dig out that putty in the seam at the back and re-do it. If you want it looking good it's a job for a body shop.

yes I am sure. last year I removed all the interior metal trim around my rear window (was cleaning off nicotine/ cigarette smell)
what I saw was a full width and full height rear window (same size as the non vinyl top fwbs/ devilles), just all of what you dont see is blacked out. the window covers all of what you see except for where the interior trim clips in.
I would not think that caddy would have changes their whole back window mounting arrangement just to add a vinyl roof (which was available alongside the metal roofed cars)

That makes sense. Over at layitlow, they sell the trim only as the only thing needed to convert to a hardtop.

If they dont have the trim listed, post that you need it and someone will PM you what their price is.
Mr.Lac, Kakalac and MR.GM84 all specialize in 80-92 Cadillac parts. They will have what you need.
