Best show of the year IMO. All brands of GM, sorted by brand and well laid out. Lots of clean, low mile stuff too, not all just muscle cars and hot rods like so many other shows.

My buddy just bought this '84 Lesabre Limited Collector's Series Coupe.

The '56 has a cleaner look, but the '57 is bolder and more distinctive. It's easy to confuse a '56 for a '55, but you won't confuse a '57 for anything else.

Went to grab a burger on the way home and parked next to a similar Bordeaux Red/Storm Grey Regal GS, but this one was a few years older and had the maroon interior, which is very rare, as they only offered that for a few years and switched to offering medium grey (like mine) or charcoal interiors on the GS's. I wish I had his wheels though.

The Impala I grew up with had a white top over green.

The early 80s Rivs are pretty sweet, too. But a dual-quad Nailhead '65 Riviera GS? :cloud9:

Gotta say the car I'd most like to own would be that 1953 Cadillac convertible. Just love how those sit, so long and low. Plus that chunky front end with the massive bumper and dagmars is just epic. Although those 1965 Riverias and along with that 72 Riveria are pretty damn cool as well. Hell even that Riveria XX is pretty damn cool, that blows away what Cadillac was offering for luxury in the 1982 Eldorado.

if you dont miind my asking, what options came on the collectors edition lesabre limited coupe?
and how much does one of those go for? I've never even heard of a collectors edition lesabre.

It's basically a "last year special" for the full size B Body Lesabre. It was made from the middle of March of 1984 through the end of the LeSabre run in 1985. Most of them featured the Park Avenue's "rolled and tucked" velour seats, the big fake wood grain trim on the tops of the doors like the Park Avenues, and a few collectors series badges. The early ones, like my buddy's, didn't have the special Park Avenue seats, but rather the typical Lesabre Limited split dual power bench seat in velour. Oldsmobile had a similar model for the Eighty Eight called the Delta Eighty Eight Royale LS, much like the Lesabre Collectors Series, it featured the interior from the discontinued Ninety Eight flagship, the Regency Brougham, except those got special all-red tail lamps and a special grille along with the usual badging.

Both the Delta 88 Royale Brougham LS (now there's a mouthful) and the LeSabre Limited Collector's Series were aimed at retaining RWD loyalists as a hedge when the FWD C-bodies were introduced. That's why they used the same interiors as the previous-generation 98 Regency Brougham and Park Avenue. Once the Delta 88 and LeSabre were converted to FWD, GM gave the Caprice a more luxurious interior. The seats in the '86 Caprice are identical to what had been offered in the Delta 88 Royal Brougham (not LS). Again, this was a hedge to keep the traditionalists in the GM fold. The Caprice continued to sell well throughout the 80s, so I think it was a smart strategy.

I wouldn't say that. Chevrolet full sized cars continually declined after 1984, and were down to just 109,000 units by 1990 from the 276,000 just 6 years earlier. That's a 60% loss in sales in half of a decade - far from a success.

Someone was still buying them... They weren't as hot as they were in the early '80s, but people were still buying them and GM didn't want to lose all of their RWD full size market to Ford.

drewsdeville
06-07-11, 01:05 AM
Definitely. However, I feel that those figures would have been very similar whether the Caprice got an interior upgrade or not. I'd be willing to bet a significant percentage of that 109,000 was stripped down fleet sales who weren't interested in fluffy seats.

Perhaps, but nowadays more of the classic box style Caprices that I see are the Brougham or LS Brougham version, not the cheapo Caprice or Caprice Classic version, but maybe that's because those got trashed over the years, and the nicer ones were actually taken care of.

To be honest the old RWD Buicks, Olds and Chevs really felt mammoth by the mid eighties. Most snow belt folks liked FWD and the folks in the rest of the country really didn't care. Let's face it the new FWD C bodies were "new" and as always folks wanted something new and different. All the cars, by this point were slow as molasses so the perceived perforamnce advantage of RWD was really just theoretical.

My extended family says similar. I come from a diehard Oldsmobile family and in the '80's they were all driving b-body Oldsmobiles. Every family function had the driveway full of Delta 88's, Ninety Eights, and Custom Cruisers. When they began switching to the FWD c-bodies, none of them looked back - not a single one. All of them touted winter performance, overall performance and fuel mileage of the freshly redesigned fuel injected and balance-shafted 3800, interior space that bested the larger b-bodies in a smaller package, and the overall feeling of improved build quality. They loved them from day one. Even if Olds had continued to offer the older RWD variants alongside the new FWD's, I'm pretty confident my family still would have purchased the smaller FWD cars that they did.

That's a 60% loss in sales in half of a decade - far from a success.Keep in mind the demographic shifts as older, traditional buyers died off and younger buyers flocked to imports during the 1980s, with market share for the Big 3 plummeting.

The generation for whom the full-size sedan was the car has been steadily shrinking for 30 years, as has the market for these cars. Had Ford not owned the market for law enforcement, taxi and livery cars by default after Chrysler and GM abandoned that segment the Panther platform would have been axed ages ago. The only remaining retail buyers for the Grand Marquis were people who were probably too old to be driving anyway.

Most car makers would be happy as clams with 100,000+ sales, especially for a model for whom all the development costs and tooling had long been paid for. I'd bet the Caprice was one of GM's most profitable products for most of the 1980s.

I've wondered how things would have worked out had Chevrolet gotten its own version of the late 80s H-body (an Impala maybe?) while continuing to sell the RWD B-body Caprice. Those H-bodies did sell well, but as profitable as the Caprice was for GM, it did make sense to keep it around.

drewsdeville
06-07-11, 01:39 AM
I'm not trying to call the Caprice a failure, I'm just saying that, using a rolling average, the Caprice fell off incredibly fast and did not continue to sell well through the '80's, contrary to the comment in post 21

The last paragraph (100k sales is good enough on a low R&D platform) I've read before, many times on crownvic.net with discussion on the Crown Vic and the entire panther platform. Ford proved them all wrong. So did GM in 1996, which was selling 100k Caprices per year. It's hard to be profitable on even the cheapest car to produce when fleet sales are the majority.

GM killed the Caprice, along with the Impala SS, Roadmaster and Fleetwood, to free up the plant in Arlington, TX for building Tahoes and Suburbans. By the late 90s, there was more sales — and profits — to be made with SUVs. That wasn't the case in the mid to late 80s when full-size sedans still sold reasonably well.

i remember it. it happens about once a month. it goes like this

someone: old rwd big body on frame cars were nice
someone else: yea yea
drewsdeville: yeah but sales declined bc people stopped liking them
someone else: nuh uh they still sold pretty well
drewsdeville: yeah but not as well as before, why do you think they killed them, plus they sucked in snow and rust to oblivion
someone else: no they killed them because they wanted to make SUVs

and then it just goes out of control from there and someone says something that isnt really grudge-worthy but someone ends up holding a grudge because of what was said. usually the grudge is held against drewsdeville even though in my observation the things he says arent necessarily inflammatory but read out of context can be seen that way.
