I have posted my transmission dilema in the Allante section, but I hope someone here could help. My car has less than 50,000 miles with new filter and tv cable but still once a week, the trans flares then clunks into 2nd at approx 22 to 23 mph. under very light throttle. I used to think it was as I turned a corner, but its happened in traffic as well. Car is up to operating temp. Fluid up to full. I have the factory manual and I'm thinking Governor weights sticky? BBOBYNSKI can you help?

My 1988 Cadillac Eldorado also does this. From what I understand, this is the nature of these transmissions. The problem can be corrected by installing a trans-go shift kit but it requires removing the transmission. When my dad & I rebuilt his transmission, we installed this kit and it did eliminate the shift flare.
Something I should clarify, this is a down shift occurence. I've let up of the throttle then reapplied it gently, like turning a corner or car in front slows down?

Mine did this to... maybe you can install an extra cooler, but the bands/clutches are already probably worn. Does it mainly happen when the trans is hot?
I can verify Ed's claim in a week or so after I install my '88s rebuilt (w/JR shift kit) 440-t4... :) But yeah thats what the shift kit is supposed to do.
Ed, what do you think about changing just the springs in the 1-2 accumulator (located in the trans pan under the governor?) I guess it might be an all or nothing, with all the new/different springs in the Valve Body as well...

Brian

Yes, this is exactly what happens.

I would install the whole shift kit works. It does take some extra time but the way the transmission shifts afterwards makes it very worth while. One thing to watch out for is the step where you have to drill across two veins in the valve body. Make sure you have a way to collect all the drill filings. You don't want any filings getting into the valves and causing them to stick.
