: Ever wonder what was on the other side?

So this is part of a project I've been working on to see if I can successfully add the Speed Alert/Speed Advisory available in the 2009+ STS.

It's also been reaffirmed for me how much I despise taking my car to someone else for service. My HUD was replaced under warranty. In order to replace this, the dash must come out of the car. I found parts of my dash structure are now cracked, there are chunks missing (albeit not in visible locations), bolts that weren't reinstalled at all and some that just weren't tightened (which likely explains some of the rattles I had) along with a broken speaker connector (with the piece rattling around the HVAC ducting). This is after the damaged parts they already replaced that the tech screwed up. Too bad I didn't look a little deeper sooner. I'm confident this damage is new because of some photos I took previously when I had the radio and instrument cluster out. There is also no history for this vehicle that work was done requiring the removal of the dash previously.

Pulling the dash is possible. I found it more time consuming than difficult and nearing the end it's definitely a two person because of the size and being awkward. I would say it's a job that most would want to undertake. Anyway, I took a lot of photos while I was in there, fixed much of the Cadillac dealerships "Handiwork" and am now contemplating another upgrade... A new dash. Since this is now in poor condition (thanks Mr. Technician :annoyed: ), I may look at an upgrade to a Platinum or V-Series dash.

And on to the pics...

Why do the manufactures use raw untreated steel in the interior structures? Seats, Dash, doors? stuff gets rusty.

WOW! That's a great picture, it's actually a lot less complicated and "cleaner" than I'd imagined ;)

WOW! I have had my 2001 Eldorado dash apart, but it sure does not look like this puppy. I had a number of items under the dash rusty due to humidity - you would think that a quality build would have all parts painted or protected. iF Cadillacs are that exposed, what about the Chevys, one of the low price three?

More pictures, like the dash pieces, and the console items.

I'll try and get some more photos up soon.

Anyone out there have a Platinum edition with a light gray interior? I'm looking for a couple of dash photos for colour and style purposes along with a VIN so I can round up a part number. Any help is appreciated.

I am definitely curious about the lense for the HUD. Mine seems to be turning white from sun UV exposure I believe. Do you think the dash needs to come out to replace the lense or does the whole HUD unit need to be replaced. Also, I want to replace my worn dashboard part that is around the ignition button, that goes over to the left side of the steering wheel where the DIC buttons are. I think I found the part for $135. Will I be able to just pop it off??
Thanks!

Sound like you may have a "flood" car?

The trim around the instrument cluster is fairly easy to replace. In order to remove it, you will first need to remove the trim around the radio/climate controls. To avoid leaving marks, I recommend using a non-marring plastic trim panel removal tool. If you're careful, you can use a small flat blade screwdriver but you should protect the end. Gently work your way around the outside. It snaps into place at six locations. Once this is out of the way, you can pop the trim around the instrument clust off in a similar manner.

As for the Head-Up Display, the lens is part of the upper case half of the module itself. You can't purchase this as a service part and would need to obtain a complete unit either as a replacement, or for the parts. I'll try and post up some pics a little later.

Thanks for the info and the pics. Looks like it will be what it is as far as the HUD is concerned! does the whole dash need to come out to get to the HUD? I installed a Lock Pick so I know my way around the nav area. I'd really like a new panel so next will be to see if I can get it for less than a buck 35! (kindda stiff!)

Thanks again!

Yup, whole dash needs to come out :( When you speak of a buck 35, what piece are you referring to? New, a HUD is about $800 and I was never able to find a used one for less that about $400. My understanding is the lens is part of the assembly and not available seperately. It would be great if this can be purchased as a service part.

ddalder, I have the light grey interior. the car isn't a platinum edition (actually don't know what that means), but if you need pics of the light grey interior, let me know.

Thanks,
matt

Thanks for the offer. I think we have the same interior as mine isn't platinum either. Platinum is basically a little fancier trim. My (applicable) RPO's are:

13I - INTERIOR TRIM,LT SMOKE GRAY (13I)
133 - TRIM COMBINATION,LEATHER,PEARL GRAY (133)

Acutally I was referring to the price of the black plastic trim piece around the steering wheel that goes over the ignition button. The first price I found online was $135. The HUD repair is definitely out of the range and scope of what I can handle, especially for something that functions normally. It's still completely readable and you can only see the cloudiness from the outside. And you're right about being able to purchhase different items that don't need to be complete assemblies as separate components of the assemblies... but then the total part count would go way up along with the separation, cataloging, manufacturing, warehousing, etc. of partial assemblies and the markups involved.

Thanks for the info!!
