IT WAS EPIC

Boarded Amtrak at 4am and got back at 10pm. Totally worth the $40 train fare.

Man I drive 25 miles for some "authentic" New York style pizza in Brentwood. The joint, Joey's Pizza, is complete with an all Italian family, 3 generations of them, from Brooklyn, all futzing at each other in Italian. Best pizza I've ever had, even better than what I had in New York.

That said, I'd have a hard time riding 4 hours on a train for a meal. Nashville has some pretty damn banging ethnic restaurants. Mama Mia's, that authentic hole in the wall Italian family place, Sitar Indian resturant, I hate curry and still love this place, Garcia's in Franklin, by far the best Mexican/central/south American cuisine you've ever had, Back to Cuba, the only authentic Cuban restaurant in the whole state, Athens greek restaurant, open 24 hours a day, I could go on. Several great sushi places as well, but you can find good sushi anywhere now days.

I have to admit that I am a bit jealous of all the time you have to yourself and the ability to always do stuff like this on a whim.

Lou Malnati's has a surprisingly good Italian beef sandwich in addition to their famous pizza.

Nicely played Jesda!

I think you're ready for some of the fine variations available for your beef. Two come to mind.

You seem to be missing the giardiniera (JAR di nair-ah) option. Sometimes referred to as 'hot' peppers in comparison to the 'sweet' peppers seen in your pictures.

For a dryer option, I prefer a Portillo's Beef Croissant with Mozzarella. Obviously the meat is allowed to drain so the bread has a chance to survive delivery to your waiting pallete. The cheese is melted into the sandwich for a different but still very pleasing experience. Portillo's defaults to cheddar for the cheese, but I prefer Mozz.

Admittedly, I've never had a traditional Italian Beef sandwich...but I would think that w/o cheese, it would just be lacking something.

And the whole buried sausage thing is kind of bizarre....

I guess I'll have to try one when I'm next in Chicago...

If you add cheese it just turns into a low-end cheesesteak.

GARY: I AM INDEED VERY JEALOUS.

So the Philly Cheesesteak is higher on the pecking order?

The Philly has more widespread appeal, but Chicago beef has more complex seasoning and a unique texture.

When you eat a good Italian beef, it hits an area of the brain that makes your head spin with joy.

To devotees the Philly Cheese steak is Nirvana on a bun! My wife being a good South Jersey girl is a South Philly cheese steak connoisseur and gets one of these sloppy but delicious sandwiches whenever she is in South Philly. I on the other hand prefer the magnificent Italian hoagies (subs) one can find throughout southern New Jersey. Hoagies/ Submarine sandwiches from other locales just don't measure up to this Phila/South Jersey fare! I don't know why these sandwich specialties don't travel, but regardless how their imitators try their product just doesn't measure up to the real McCoy!

Putting cheese on an Italian beef sandwich or ketchup on a hotdog in Chicago can get you arrested or hurt.

Chicago deep dish pizza can't hold candle to New York Pizza, or Philadelphia pizza. Or for that matter Sao Paulo pizza.

Don't confuse a Philly Cheese Steak with what goes by the name of "Italian Beef Sandwich" in Chicago; very different animals. I have heard that the best "Italian Beef Sandwich" is to be had in Pittsburgh, I do know they are very good there!

Portillos has gotten too greasy over the years. There are better options though they are much less well known.
