: Am I weird for thinking this is kind of a cool car?

If there were more of them out there to choose from, and if they were a little cheaper, I think it would make a pretty good winter car. Subaru all wheel drive, and a little bed to haul stuff around in. I know it's goofy looking, but I really don't care about that. I'm quite goofy looking, so it might be a good match.

I've always thought they were neat, but at 6'5" I have NO head room. Too bad, because they look like they'd be a lot of fun.

They're kinda cute in their own way, and actually fairly practical. Too bad the laws have changed so they don't have the rear facing seats in the bed anymore. Riding around in those with only these bmx handlebar grip-like things to hold on to was a real hoot.

oh man i miss those rear facing seats a friend father had a pick up truck i think it was a nissan back in the day he had those seats tlaking back in the 80s i loved to ride in them
i was looking into putting them in a pick up a few years ago i found out that i could not the only ones allowed our if they are grandfather lawed as in if they have been in the car before the laws changed
then you can keep them they won't make you take them out as long as you can proove they have been there since the law changed and not after i have only seen 2 in the last 20 years with them

Rear facing seat? Get a wagon.

I've always thought those Subaru, whatchamacallit, trucks were kind of cool. I would think they would come with all-wheel drive and with that little open bed in the back gives it some flexibility.

Close, Jimmeh. I always keep an eye out for the Forester XT...

It's a Subaru Baja. And no, Jimmy you're not weird. I think they're cool as hell. And you could get a turbo model too. Forester XT FTW too. Do want!

that's a given.

There is a silver baja for sale I drive past every day. I keep thinking I should stop and take a look at it. It's just they are in the $8k-$10k range which is alot more than I want to spend on a winter car.

btw, I like Foresters too. I just the thought the external bed would be cool to have, as I could use it for delivery on occasion.
I also like the Impreza wagons.

Stingroo

^ Impreza wagon gets my stamp of approval, but beware: manuals are HARD to come by.

Baja is fugly.

If I get a winter car, it will be an auto. I don't want to try putting a remote start on a manual. too complicated.

Stingroo

Well then you're good to go.

Guy on the B-wagon forum has a 5-speed turbo Impreza wagon for his "winter rat" too. lol

JimmyH

I don't want a turbo. Especially on an old car. Just one more thing that can break. And those older turbo cars are notorious for lag. I knew a guy with a Talon who had a turbo timer on his so it would idle for 10 minutes and shut off on its own.

Stingroo
05-12-11, 05:28 PM
His isn't old. It's an '06.

Don't know anyone who's ever had one of the older ones.

JimmyH
05-12-11, 05:45 PM
I guess I need to start remembering that alot has changed in the last 5 years. When I think of turbo motors, I automatically go to the 90's Talons and Eclipses.

Stingroo

Most of those old DSM turds are off the road now...either beat to hell by their juvenile owners, crashed or rusted away...

I don't know. I still see them around. When I was looking for one last year, autotrader was littered with them. So is craigslist. Which doesn't mean they are in great shape. The first gens were able to take considerable amounts of punishment.

No! There is nothing like powersliding for hundreds of feet on a snow covered road...

I saw a 4wd pickup do that a few winters back. Wasn't pretty.

To the driver of that particular 4WD pickup truck, I say:

Well, the Subaru isn't a truck and the AWD has a nice RWD bias that allows you to kick the rear out easily without spinning it.

I took my father's XT and left a Dunkin Donuts sideways and kept it 45 degrees off center for at least a couple hundred yards...

Said truck ended up in a ditch btw. This was after he passed me and the guy in front of me because our lame rwd cars were going too slow for him. It gives you a warm fuzzy when idiots like that get theirs.
