: iPod extension cable

Has anyone had any luck with an extension cable for their iPod/iPhone? I just bought one off eBay and it doesn't work in our cars. Is there one that does? I use mine for my iPhone and can't stand that it's hidden in the console when I need to look at it.

Aren't they all the 3.5MM-1/8" dual male terminal ones? Was it seated right? I am using an older one that works just fine. Don't take this wrong, but it is the one for stereo right (two positives and a ground)?

It was seated correctly. I was reffering to this cable:

I think it has been determined that the ipod cable used in the CTS has a chip in it of some kind? Which is why regular ipod usb cables won't work. The extension probably interferes in some way.

This is very disappointing. Has anyone figured out another way to get this accomplished?

just buy the whole kit off ebay. I bought mine and I can play it from the trunk if I wanted too.

Has anyone tried the cable that goes with a Kenwood aftermarket unit? They have both the USB and audio cable like the ones in our cars.

Yes, I would love a solution to this inconvenience as well.

Since the chip is in the base that connects to the Ipod (or so I was told), has anyone tried to extend the usb and 3.5 jack separately?

JOEYCTS-V

I never thought of doing that. I guess it might work. Anyone?

It is $2.60 in parts and about the same for shipping. So you could have a $5 solution by this weekend.
If it doesn't work, you are out $5 and have two cords to throw in a drawer.

I dunno. That's kind of steep. ;)

the thing about these cables (like the one posted above) is that they use the usb only for charging and the audio cable for audio...

as far as i know there's some sort of chip inside the GM cable that allows the head unit and steering wheel controls as well as charging

adding that chip costs a lot more because it's not generic (only used on certain gm vehicles)

extending the GM cable with two separate cables will probably be the only/best way

I just tested a USB extension cord and it works perfect. I do not have a 3.5mm m/f cord available to test, but I was more concerned about the USB working. I am still looking for 1 foot white cords to match the GM factory wiring (I think 3 feet is overkill), but it appears this method will work.

So is this the BigRon mod since I came up with it?

Edit: I will go to radioshack tomorrow and get a 3.5mm cord to confirm this will work then start looking harder for components.

It will be if you can make them for us and sell them!

The one I posted is used for control of the iPod through a headunit or steering wheel controls just like our cars.

all i know is that people who have tried other cables that look like the GM cable haven't had any success

I forgot to mention that I ordered both of those cables yesterday. I'll let you know how it works. I don't see it being a problem.

Other similar cables off ebay have been tired with some success, but I have yet to read about one that charges, plays audio and displays on the screen with all the functionality like the GM cord.

The product description states:

This cable allows you to control your iPod content with the Kenwood's controls

This cable currently works with Kenwood's DNX9980HD, KVT-696, and KVT-516 receivers

But if someone wants to drop $30 + shipping to try it out I say go for it.

Hopefully I can confirm full functionality of my solution tonight.

I decided to try the "Bigron" modification. I went to Radio Shack and bought a 3' usb cable and a 3' 3.5mm stereo audio cable with a female coupler and hooked it up.

Works great. Just like OEM.

Only thing I don't like is that having two cables 3' long is kinda messy looking for my taste. Can't complain too much though, as it solves the problem. I think 1' may be a better solution for others looking to do this "mod"

Sounds good, saved me a drive to RadioShack tonight. Thanks for confirming. I will try to find 1' white cords and see if I can get a bulk rate if I order up a couple and pass along the savings and avoid the hassle of finding them to the group. I already found 1' black cords, but I would like to try and match the white.

there's no reason that this shouldn't work ... the magic is happening in GM's special cable...

Well, I received the two cables in the mail today and they DO work. It charges the phone and you're also able to use the ipod. I can't believe the quality of the cables for just over $1.00. Both cables including shipping was only $5.00. Thanks for the idea Bigron. The only problem I have is closing the center console with the wires hooked up. Does anyone have a solution/idea on what to do? I was thinking on drilling a hole and leaving the cable ends in the cup holder but don't know exactly where to start.

does it access your ipod as an ipod? or as a usb storage device?

JOEYCTS-V
05-12-11, 03:48 PM
Not sure if I understand your question. It accesses the iPod like the factory cable used to. It sees it as an AUX hookup.

What I mean is; when I had my CTS, I was able to plug in my ipod, with the regular ipod cable (I bought used and never got a GM ipod cable). It would charge and play songs just fine, but the radio did not see it as an ipod. To the radio, my ipod looked just like a regular usb thumb drive. The GM cable allows the radio to see the ipod as an ipod, and make use of playlists. That is my understanding anyway.

Bigron
