View Full Version : Mileage and Power loss, again.

Hello all,

I just replaced #5 F.I. on my car because it was completly shot. Not spraying anything. Well, I replaced it and met up with a friend roughly 30 minutes away. Car ran great, mileage was back up to where it usually was (21MPG). Needless to say, I was rather happy.

Well, the next day I noticed my mileage was dropping back down. It's at 18.5, now. Engine still runs fine, but seems to have lost some power. (I very well could just be imagining that part, though)

Noticing that, I again checked for any leaks around the fuel rail. It all looked good. I picked up a spark tester at my work which seems to be composed of a neon tube which reacts to the electron flow through each cable. IE, you just touch it to the cable and it will light up with each fireing. I used it and it tipped me off that one of my spark plugs was fouled up. I pulled it, cleaned it. Checked it again and it ran off as fine, that was before I changed the F.I.

Well, I just finished doing some odd's and ends to my car and, among other things, I used the spark tester on all the spark plugs. It is now showing me that they are all losing spark when I rev the engine up(The tester will periodically stopped lighting up when I rev the engine..doesn't always do it, but seems to be the majority of the time).

Is my Rotor/Cap bad? Is that tester crap and is just making me worry for no reason?

any ideas?

Thank you all in advance.

Dustin

It's probably just the tester but it is simple enought to pull the cap and rotor and visually inspect them for wear, cracks, or carbon tracking. You can also visually inspect the coil while it is apart. Just be careful not to cross wire when reinstalling the wires to the cap. BTDT.

Thanks, DFBonnet. I'll have to inspenct them when I get home from work tonight.

Also, I havn't forgotten about measuring the resistance on my fried injector. Just so you know. :) I'm just having trouble getting a hold of a VOM since mine was melted months back. Sun is hotter than you realize, heh.

I will probably just bite the bullet and go buy a new one.

I will get your the results, though.
