A guy I know wanted the Thunderbird so bad he couldn't see straight, so I sold it to him Tuesday night. I let it go for $1,500 just to be done with it. The head gasket was blown and there was a tick in the motor. Not sure if it was from the coolant getting sucked into the motor or if something else was going on. Whatever the case was, it's gone now. In it's place now sits a 1996 Ford Explorer with the 302. It needs a through, and I do mean through scrubbing. I've already washed it twice at the car was and still needs to be gone over again. And the interior is worse than the exterior was. It's in good shape inside, though, underneath the filth.

The truck isn't the nicest looking thing on the road, but it runs great and has ice cold A/C. It rides and drives good, and has pretty damn comfortable seats to be a Ford.

Not exactly what I wanted, but it'll work. I can put a little money into it and make it look a lot better. For now though it's something I don't have to be OCD over and will get me where I need to go. I think it's worth the $1,400 I gave for it.

I'll take better pics of the interior when I get it cleaned up. That's as close as I wanted to get with the camera because it's disgusting inside. He kept the maintenance up on the truck and didn't beat it up, but detailing was not high on his list of priorities. All of the seats are in good shape though. No rips in the leather and just normal wear for the age and mileage.

Tomorrow I'll transfer my tag and insurance over, scrub a layer or two of filth off the interior, and try to track down a master window switch.

Ben, it has 149,6XX on it.

That's pretty damn nice for $1400. Is it 2wd or 4wd?? Seats are nice as well, usually on old beater cars like this the leather is ripped to shreds. Are they comfortable? Cause they sure do have enough adjustments to look comfortable.

ga_etc

2 wheel drive. And the seats are pretty good. Both front seats have 8 way power adjustments with power adjustable bolsters and lumbar. The recliner is manual though. I don't think the bolsters or lumbar on the driver seat work, but that's a non-issue.

We had a 1996 Explorer XLT. It had the 4.0 V6, leather, sunroof, etc. I REALLY miss it, it was an amazing rig. Never broke down, never got stuck, and what little did break was DIRT cheap to fix. It had amazingly comfortable seats. Ours was dark red with a light grey interior. Well played, Austin.

Does it smoke on startup? My 302 started to do that around 140K, but then again, I beat the snot out of it. When I took it apart there was no visible cylinder wear and I could still see the honing marks. However, the timing chain was wildly stretched:

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m280/merc892003/12-07-10_1646.jpg

Yours should have an updated set though hopefully minus the plastic cam gear...

I had that rig for 8 years and all I ever had to do was a water pump and an ignition module. Epic reliability from the oval.

It seems to be a decent old truck. I was told by a mechanic that I could part the truck out and get more out of it than my purchase price. The motor consists of the block from a '96 F150 but the heads and intake are from the '95 Mustang GT, also referred to as GT40 heads.

It really doesn't look bad at all, especially for $1400. Fix that front bumper and the fender and polish it up and it will be a really nice SUV for many years to come. I'm sure it sucks down gas like nobodies business though...

When I was researching these midsized SUV's last winter, I found out that the Explorer was the best riding & most comfortable and had the best assembled interior. Yeah, they really are. And the car really was in as good of shape as it looked in the pictures. You're absolutely right about the 2.3 too. When the turbo came on and it put you in your seat the last thing you really cared about was how refined the motor was though lol.

Still, any mods you can do to a Mustang you can do to a 5.0 Explorer. Question is, is it worth it? It would take a ton of mods just to make it as fast as a stock 5.0 Mustang. I say slap headers and dual exhaust w/Flowmaster mufflers and just make it a cool sounding cruiser.

Right now the CEL is on with codes showing for the EGR valve and camshaft position sensor. I don't know for sure if those are effecting my gas mileage, but if mods are done, it will be to help with the MPGs. Intake and exhaust are probably the most beneficial things to do, plus they make it sound better anyway, so it's win-win. Stock the truck is rated at 210HP and 280TQ. I believe the torque numbers too. It has a full posi rear end and street tires on it, no A/Ts. I went to a friend's house earlier and it's been raining all day. This thing will get your attention in a hurry. A little too enthusiastic with your right foot and the rear will step out before you know it.

A little extra oomph and a lower center of gravity and this thing could be all kinds of fun.
