View Full Version : B&B cones, or leave the Dynatech cones in?

So, I'm pretty darn happy with my B&B resonator version exhaust (sound wise) since I added the Dynatech cones to the headpipe by the slipjoints.

Billy and the crew sent me some of their cones, and now I'm trying to decide if I should install them or just leave well enough alone...StealthV - didn't you have Dynatechs installed like I have at one point?

Comments appreciated (and the BMR AWH kit is nearly modded to clear the B&B!)

My V has the B&B resonator version with Vortex cones at the slip joint for the past 3,000 miles. No advice here on the B&B cones as I've never tried them. The integral mount of the B&B cones is very nice.

:worship: the sound of a LS6 singing through B&B 3" pipes

Wild,

After installing my B&B cones I could not be happier. It really tamed the exhaust down but still has the rumble at idle and wide open throttle. Car doesnt sound like a "F-body or a truck" anymore.

Shane -

Had you tried the Dynatech beforehand, or just have B&B experience?

My curiousity is whether they will sound any different?

Wild,

Just the B&B. Car really sounds good. :)

Do you have the X-Pipe or resonator?

Could you guys with the cones please repeat...in plain non-mechanical speak...where you put the cones??

I don't know what a slip joint is...so are they behind the cats, in front of the resonator, or what? tips of cones facing forward?

Thanks!

Urbanski, the B&B exhaust has a flanged and bolted joint near the rear axle. Towards the front of the car, near the transmission, the B&B exhaust has another joint in the pipes that is connected by slipping one pipe over the other and using a band clamp to secure.

My Vortex cones are installed in that forward slip joint which is between the resonator and the cats. The cones are facing forward.

B&B has tested their cones and found they work best at the rear axle area (the bolted and flanged joint). Hence the B&B cones have the built-in flanges to bolt in-line at the rear joint. The B&B cones should face forward as well.

Does that answer your question? If not, I'm ready for more clarification....

Original installation: X-piped exhaust system with dynatech cones.

Current installation: X-piped exhaust system with B&B cones and sound isolation mounts.

Over all impression: Sounds great but a little tamer (mellow) than the Dynatechs. I had the dynatechs originally installed at the same pipe location. I did chuck away $130 for the Dynatech but the B&B modification has eliminated the drone...and again thanks Billy.

Installation: B&B are installed at the flange where the mid pipe section connects to the muffler section. The point of the cone always points to the LS6. Install one gasket in front of the B&B cone and the other behind. The mount holes in the B&B cone may have to be elongated a bit. This can be done with a rat tail file or using a routing bit. Enlarging the holes took all on 30 seconds to complete.

Do I think the change is worth it? YES

To clarify what you've said - you WOULD recommend I swap the DT cones for the B&B in my resonator exhaust at this point? Fair enough, I'll try next time the exhaust drops out for whatever "secret" mod I may be working on at that point :lildevil:

Yes, I'd recommend the change. It took about 20 minutes on a lift. The B&B are definitely more refined.

thanks for the cone info guys :)

i'm pretty sure I'm having a local shop install the BB. My jack stands are only 2-ton, and I'm not sure I want to push my luck hehe
