Newbie here

A friend sold me a 1986 DeVille for $500...I'm luvin it

149k on the odometer...no rust..hasn't been banged up

the motor runs strong..well as strong as a 4100 will anyhow..great gas milage though

some minor issues..passenger window wont work..the pistons that hold the hood open are shot..A/C needs charged..some tears in the leather seat on the drivers side...did I mention it was only $500?

My car has half that mileage and all of the above problems. Welcome to General Motors.

Post up some pics of that ugly beast!!!

Most any car you can get for $500 that runs great is a steal. Well I wouldn't buy a $500 European anything, considering how much it costs for parts and you usually have to take it to a specialist. But any tom, dick, or harry should be able to service your Caddy.

Mine was gold with a padded top and it had the 4.1. It was a "mint" example but not my kinda car and I quickly sold it. It rode real nice though, I remember that impression. :cool2:

It looks respectable enough.
It sat in a cornfield on my friends farm for a few months, he decided he had too many vehicles around and needed to get rid of a couple of them...and I just happened to be needing a running car cheap

Once I get it nice and cleaned up inside and out...I wouldn't be ashamed to pick up a date with it.

Hello and welcome... nice car, it is really hard to find a 500$ car in running condition. But yours seems to be even in good condition, well except those small problem here and there which is normal for a car with that age and millage....

I normally don't like that color, but I am digging the "old man tan" on that Caddy. Very period correct IMO.

Meh, 150k or 50k...after 20 years old, anythings game. The aging process is a lot more harsh than mileage.

LOL...I hate how GM tried to make all their cars the same across the divisions and blurred their individual idenities.

I would love to own a true classic Caddy from the late 60's/early 70's era

Excellent bargain! Looks straight and presentable. I'd have no problem driving it. The struts for the hood are easily replaceable. A/c should be an easy fix too. Not a bad ride, looks like you scored!

Nice! Even if you only get two months of service from it, you still got your moneys worth

You sold it why did you do that its not like it had an N in it manThe Northstar was not Cadillac's first foray into the world of crappy power plants. Cadillac has had a whole series of them and gotten quite good at it I might add. :bigroll: At least the N* was pleasant till it imploded. Same cannot be said for the 4100.

I'd say that the 4.9L was their best all around engine although like the post 2000 N*, it was a bumpy road in getting there.

I vote for the '88-'89 TBI 4.5. Contained all of the significant updates from the 4.1, yet didn't have some of the finicky PFI problems the 4.9 can have.

The N*s tendency to consume oil will always bother me. Regardless of why it is acceptable for the design, I think it's unacceptable in a $40-$60k luxury car. You will never find a businessman in suit and tie, happy about pulling into the gas station, popping the hood, and checking the oil in his flashy Cadillac while his colleagues snicker and laugh while waiting in the car .

I think since GM couldn't fix the problem, they just labeled it as 'acceptable'. This is the case with the Saturn 4 cylinders.

For $500, you really can't lose.

If the motor took a crap tomorrow..I could get my 500 back scrapping it

I tend to think if the motor's held up this long..it just might be a good one
