: Wheel and Tire Question

I found some wheels for my 06 STS V6 that I can buy reasonable. I would like to have a second set of wheels that I can put on in the winter with Blizzak's. The problem is the wheels I am looking at are 18" wheels. The factory setup is 17" wheels with the back ones being 17x8 and fronts 17x7.5's. Will I have problems with the 18" wheels or will they work OK for me. The problem is not whether they will fit as much as it is a question about handling, ride, gas mileage, and speedometer accuracy. Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks,

Brad

As long as the tire diameter is pretty close to the 17 inch wheel/tire package you'll be fine. As you go up in wheel diameter (18's) you'll have to go to a lower profile tire to maintain overall matching diameter; shouldn't be hard at all to get this done (if they make Blizzacks in lower profiles).

Generally for winter wheels/tires, you'd go with smaller diameter wheels and a higher profile tire.

In what condition are your 17" tires? With differing sizes, I'd be inclined to go with Summer tires on the 18's.

This site will make it easy to compare/contrast tire sizes:

Thanks for the information. I may put summer tires on the 18's and put winter tires on the 17's. The tires on the 17's are in good shape but I am not terribly crazy about the tires from a performance standpoint. The previous owner put the same size tires on all wheels even though the back wheels are wider. I bought the car right so if I need to put a little extra cash into the tires I could do that without feeling bad about the investment. I like the idea of having a set of winter wheels and tires and a set of summer wheels and tire. The road salt is very hard on the wheels in Minnesota. I like the looks of the 18" wheels so I would not mind going this route I need to see the wheels before I buy them. I want to make sure they are not trashed or bent before I shell out the coin for the wheels. I just wanted to do a little research before I bought something I could not use. I know there are a lot of people on this forum that have experience with the topic.

Thanks,

Brad

Why does tire rack say that the 06 STS V6 has 18" oem rims?

Some do. There are 3 tire options.

Base = all 4 are 17x7.5 mounted with 235/50's
Performance = 17x7.5 Front 17x8 Rear with 235/50 & 255/45 respectively
Luxury Performance = all 4 18x8 mounted with 235/50 Front & 255/45 Rear

Yeah, the 18" wheels were included if the V6 car had the 1SC package.
