View Full Version : Finally a proud STS owner...but I have an issue

I guess college does pay off... Finally, after 12 years of hand me down cars driven til they die... Well last week I found and purchased the perfect 08 STS I think I could find for myself.

STS4 V8 with Moonstone exterior and Ebony leather inside. Fully loaded down to the 18's with Brembos. It was worth the wait...and 5 hr flight.

Anyways.... the issue is not with the car, but with me. I'm embarrassed, but I purchased 2 new key fobs. And I know it says to pry them open but I swear I've tried every way to open the new key fobs that won't damage them or mark them up. They were purchased new direct from GM so I know they are genuine.

Is there some secret to opening these things, I mean I could pry it open with a knife, but if I didn't have to mar it all up or break it, that would be great. Its not like my old GM use a penny deal.

And I'm not being ridiculous I swear, it really does feel like they are going to break every time I try...

Anyways....This site is great, most all my questions have been answered through a forum search. I can't believe how much I can learn in such a limited time here.

But I must be the only one who has this issue... I hope not.

try a very sharp paring knife
I think I have gotten one of mine open that way and not had any damage....a dime should work as well

There is place on the edge of the key fob that is made to be an opening point

BTW..I have an 05 and I am assuming it has the same general form

Make sure you take the key out first. You do that by pushing the button just under the chrome, and then pulling the key out. The car should have come with two fobs, were they missing?

It came with only one key fob, for whatever reason the previous owner lost the other. So I purchased 2 additional key fobs and blank keys. I guess I'm gonna have to get aggressive on it and trust I won't break it.

How did you finally get it open? I did it once and didn't leave any marks, don't know if I could do it again...........

I used a pocket knife along the edge on one side, then around the others, it just took a lot more pressure, I was almost certain it would break it.
