: Car is broken in.....let the mods begin. First up, CAI.

I finally hit 1000 miles and consider the car now "broken in".....so, time to install some parts. My plan for now is to get a CAI installed, Eibach Pro springs installed, Kooks 1 7/8" headers installed, Corsa Touring exhaust installed, DMH low-profile electric cutouts installed and then a dyno/tune. I have a few other mods planned also and will get to those when the parts come in. I also plan to make this as much as a father and son activity as possible. Boys need to have skillz that don't only involve video gaming, texting and facebooking. In other words, my son Jordan will be my tool bitch. :o This should be fun
I will probably never track it (fat piggy) but a little extra horsepower and some modding won't hurt.

First up- Airaid CAI for 2009-2011 CTS-V's. I ordered this part with a nice discount and the company (StreetSide Auto) even overnight-ed it for free due to a supplier delay. Great price considering the quality of parts. I am impressed so far:

I didn't realize there was so many parts in the kit. Nicely packaged with nice powder-coated parts:

Underhood shot of the plastic fantastic engine bay. Area marked within red will be replaced:

Got the car in the garage sideways and ready to go:

First step.......disconnect the battery. Oh yeah, it's in the trunk:

Next remove all the plastic ass covers (shock tower and engine cover):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/G35Coupe/Car%20stuff/DSC05355.jpg

Disconnect the PCV line and MAF, loosen a few hose clamps......pull the original intake out:

Original and replacement parts:

Next, remove the airbox and filter:

All the original parts removed.....I love working on a clean car:

Make your son put shit back together:

Assembled the new intake support pieces:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v16/G35Coupe/Car%20stuff/DSC05367.jpg

Install the new air filter to the support plenum:

Install the air filter assembly followed by the intake tube. Some bolts were a pain in the ass to get to, but overall the CAI was well designed and fit very well:

Reinstall all the chintzy plastic covers, reconnect the battery and start her up. I'll have to take it out later and let the computer reset itself with the new intake. Sounds nice:

Looks like you mixed up some of the screws in the assembly of the CAI..the 4 screws that secure the cover for the filter area are supposed to be black.

Actually, I didn't like the black phillips head screws that came with it and bought some stainless socket head screws to replace them. The hardware store didn't have enough black socket head screws.....I'm going to grab those when they come in.

Drove to Williamsburg, VA for the Cars & Coffee event. Had a chance to try out the intake........sounds good.

Thanks for the write-up with pix, DoingOK! About how long did the swap take you?

DoingOK
04-17-11, 02:30 PM
Took me about 2.5 to 3 hours......took my time and I was teaching my son some stuff along the way. If I was to do another one....could probably do it in 1.5 hours comfortably.

Looks great! Can you tell a sound difference?

DoingOK

Most noticeable difference is the supercharger whine.............more prevalent for sure.

Don't forget to clean your maf sensor after a few hundred miles and maybe after a thousand or so. These oiled filters really gunk up the maf's fast

Not sure I expected much power difference (~3% overall increase is my guess?). I will be getting a tune once the headers and exhaust goes on so I expect a little increase. The sound is good....much louder supercharger whine.

Thanks, will do.

Just a simple 10meg Sony point & shoot.....nothing fancy.

Thanks Casey........

Next up, installing the Eibach Pro springs. I just cut 1/4 coil off the front springs to hopefully achieve the proper "rake" when lowering. Angle grinder is my new favorite tool. Hit the ends of the springs with some black touch-up paint and they are good to go:

Why am I thinking those look like the rear springs?

nm, looks like you cut 1/4 coil off the bottom of the front springs?

DoingOK
04-22-11, 01:14 PM
Nope.....cut 1/4 coil off the top of the front springs. BTW- you made me go check again ;-)

And just in case anyone was wondering......the front coil is on the left and the rear coil is on the right, in correct installation orientation:

Just order an Airaid SynthaMax filter....it is a dry (non-oil) filter and you won't have to worry about oil build up on the MAF.

Most of all other forums have a DIY sticky. This should be in it if we ever had one. That's for the detailed instructions. The air raid will be my first mod also
