I thought others here might be interested in this.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a Thunder Gray V-wagon, but heard from one of the dealers that I spoke to that several colors, including Thunder Gray are not available for new orders any longer. Indeed, right now, only black, black diamond, red, silver, and white is available. And white only in limited quantities.

It's unclear if this is related to components of those paints (Thunder Gray, Evo Green etc) come from the same Japanese plant that has made Ford and others to announce they've stopped orders on some colors, or for some other reason.

I'm very bummed, because I was fully set on Thunder Gray (with Evo Green as my backup color). So don't know what to do now. Go for black or black diamond? (Black's nice, but I promised myself never to get another black car again.) Or wait for 2012 models, at which time the paint issue should be resolved?

FWIW, the Crystal Red color is also on constraint. The same Crystal Red is used on the Corvettes as well. Several Vette colors have become unavailable as well as Camaro colors, etc., and it's not just GM. The plant that makes the metallic pigment that is in short supply is supposed to resume production around June I believe.

There are no alternate suppliers for paint?

I was talking to my friend at the plant this morning, Thunder Gray should be good to go, EVO Green is being phased out in the 2012's so that might be the issue with ordering it. There is a scheduled plant shutdown coming up for a few weeks that could also affect orders or delay them.

Only one plant in the world makes the Xirallic pigment used by many auto makers for some of their metallic paints.

sounds like expensive paint. No wonder GM loves to lay it on the V's so thin.

I hope so, I'm about to go ahead & order my Thunder Gray CTS-V wagon as well...
