: Oil Soaked Radiator Hose

I've got a bit of a problem. My lower radiator hose is leaking antifreeze, this much I know (I think). What has me utterly baffled is the oil soaked radiator hose, particuarly right at the radiator connection. Where is this oil coming from?

Sure it's not trans oil leaking from the in tank cooler?

I'm thinking its motor oil. My oil is black, but my trans oil isn't.

Actually, I was planning to change the oil this weekend.

Hmm. Any chance it has an oil cooler in one of the rad tanks? Some of the later RWD cars have a trans cooler in one tank, and an oil cooler in the other. Check to see if there are lines coming out of both tanks.

I believe '85 had an oil cooler. They weren't used in '89 though...

There are metal lines extending from the right side of the radiator. What that means... I dunno.

Are there metal lines from both sides?

It would appear that there are lines coming from the right side only.

Ok, those lines are the trans cooler. Check the hose on the other end where it attaches to the water pump. Perhaps there is an engine oil leak, and the oil is following the hose down. Front of the intake manifold perhaps.

From what I can see without jacking the car up, the coolant is leaking from somewhere near the water pump. The lower radiator hose is definitely swollen around the watter pump, and coolant appears to be leaking from somewhere higher up from there.

Time to get under the car. Likely a bad water pump. It will leak out the weep hole on the bottom. You should be able to figure out the oil leak while you are down there.

I had come to that same conclusion, I just needed someone with a more expert opinion to confirm.
