: Front End Noise

Hey Guys!

So I took my 2007 ESV (70,000 miles) in last week for a rattle/wobble type sound coming from the left front. Dealer replaced the intermediate shaft and said it was fixed. I left the dealer and heard the noise again. Today it went back to have them look at it. Here is what happens:

Below 40 mph
Deceleration only (if you accelerate it stops)
Lower the speed the louder
Seems louder when braking and turning left
Warmer weather increases the sound
I can feel it through the floor on drivers side

The sound is like a low wobble sound like a loose shock or strut. I would swear I hear a very low grinding noise sometimes as well. I took the advisor for a ride in and she heard it before leaving the dealers lot. She was saying something about the motor mount. Doesn't seem to fit the normal diagnosis for a mount as it makes no noise when accelerating.

Anything I should be on the look out for?? I'm not really trusting the dealer after the last visit because of other issues.

Thanks!!! Rob

Hey Rob,
I drive an 07 escalade and I'm dealing with the same exact problems. I have about 80,000 miles on it. Tech said that my hub assembly needs to be replaced. My extended warranty will cover this but I've been waiting two weeks for parts to come in. I was also told my front and rear shocks need to be replaced. Warranty will not cover. I'll keep you posted once repaired.

Dr. J-

Thanks for the info!! As I was reading your reply my dealer to tell me they are not able to duplicate at this time (of course) but are keeping it inside to warm it up. I told them what you said about yours and they are going to check into it.

I will update when I hear back and look forward to your update as well!! Did they give yours back or are you still in a rental?

THANKS!!

Dealer called and said left front shock and they are replacing but won't do the right side. I believe they are to be replaced together or am I wrong??

Exact same thing happening right now with my 07. Front left, wobble, grinding, ect. I have 60k miles on it. Dealer replaced sway bar linkage and said it was fixed. I drove about 10 feet and heard it again before leaving the lot. Now they are going to replace the strut.....a week later and I am still waiting for them to get the part!

Thanks! I have always replaced them in sets in the past. The right one is leaking fluid so they are going to check that one. I'm hoping this repairs it as this is the second trip in for the samething and both times I have told them is sounded like a failed shock. I will post an update later tonight. They are supposed to bring me the car later today when they are finished with it.

Update: So I picked it up tonight and all is fixed. Front left shock was bad. They replaced both front shocks and it drives like new!! Covered under warranty as well.

I just picked up an '08 ESV with pretty high mileage (95k) with this same exact noise. I couldn't have described it better myself. I'll need to get it in the shop this week and point them in the shock direction. I have a few things that need to be done before I hit the 100k mark.

I have the exact same problem on my 07.. Mine is not under warranty and has the air shocks... Im nervous as to much these repairs would be if you had to pay out of pocket!? I cant stand the noise. Nobody else really notices, but I can right away and its driving me nuts!

Thanks in advance!

its funny your saying there only gunna change one shock and not the other. well i had the dreaded piston slap and i finaly got the dealer to step up to the plate and its not piston slap it was the number seven piston and connecting rod was bad so they changed just the one go figure at 80000 miles well its all fixed now thank god i was tired off that noise

Hmm... Occasionally I feel something like a few light taps through the floorboard under my left foot. I suppose that could be the shock. Good info.

Unless you have a Platinum or one o the later trucks with MRC, you only have leveling shocks in the rear. It is NOT an "air suspension".

Can also be the body/frame mount...I think there is a TSB on it.

Sorry guys I posted an update Friday night to this but it isn't there!

So I picked it up Friday night and they replaced both front shocks. The thing drives like a brand new one! No more noise or tapping on the floor! All covered under the certified warranty. Needless to say I am very happy to have it bad and all fixed. Not sure about cost as it was warranty but I would have expected to pay about $1000 for it given the cost of the shocks. Not sure about how long it takes as the dealer took four days to do it!! It took them four hours to get the parts. I can't imagine it took the tech more then 1.5 hours at the most to make the repair. My only disappointments are that A) they didn't listen to me when I took it in the first time three weeks ago and fix it then. :banghead: B) It took way too long to repair and they are not so good with communication. But it is back and correctly repaired and I am happy!! Hope this helps someone!!

Thanks! Rob

I bit the bullet and took my ESV into the shop. I checked the parts department and one shock was around $450 (ouch!) I checked on getting it installed and that was only about $150. I figured it'd be the better part of a day for me to install it. So I decided to let the shop do it. I described the noise and where I thought it was coming from (front left). They thought they same and replaced the shock (or strut). Took it for a test drive and still the same noise. Turns out it's the right front making the noise. Since they only had one shock in stock, I'll be back there tomorrow. They are letting me have the front left for no charge since he says they should have caught the noise as coming from the right. Very bizarre that the noise is transferring that much to the left side, but I noticed when hitting bumps today that the noise is the loudest when the right wheel hits a bump. So glad I didn't take this job on myself. I'll have 2 new shocks for the price of one tomorrow.

Possibily a stupid question, but after a strut has been replaced should they do an alignment? Dealer just replaced the front driver side strut on my 07 and told me they didnt need to align it after they replaced it. I always thought an alignment was necessary after any suspention work. Is this accurate?

Hey Rob,

I got my hubs replaced, I'm still having the same problems. I'm planning to replace shocks next week. I hope to have a success story like you. What replacement shock did you go with? I'm going with the Arnott Bielstien or something like that(front and rear). I'll keep you posted.

Dr. J -

Sorry it didn't fix yours! I had the dealer do it so I assume they are factory replacements. They didn't ask me if I wanted anything different. A week later and still good so I am very happy. It was 86 here today and all was quite and that wasn't the case last time it warmed up.

Good Luck!!!!

Just got back from the shop after getting the right front shock replaced for noise that was coming from the front left. Noise is gone and ride is smooth as butter. I can only imagine what the magnetic shocks are like. Hopefully there will be a retrofit kit available when these shocks go out.

Also, had them update the transmission. They needed to update the ECM to accept the update, so I got a 2 for one deal there, too. Shifting is better, but the 2-3 shift is still not as smooth as all the other shifts. It smoothed out a lot between the shop and work so hopefully it's still learning.

Thought I had the same problem. Bad grinding/vibration from 20-40 MPH espically making a right turn. Turns out to be hub. Being replaced as I type.......

Guys, is any of this stuff covered under the factory 5 year 100K mile warranty? I picked up an 07 at the end of December and this just started to occur on my truck. I even got the service suspension message so all signs are pointing to the strut. If it's not covered, I'll be doing the work myself.

Cadillac Cust Svc
04-20-11, 11:49 AM
The suspension system is not covered under the 5 year 100,000 mile Powertrain warranty. What is covered includes the engine, transmission/transaxle, transfer case (where applicable) and the drive systems. The Drive Systems Coverage Includes: All internally lubricated parts, final drive housings, axle shafts and bearings, constant velocity joints, propeller shafts, universal joints, wheel bearings, front and rear hub bearings, locking hubs, mounts, supports, seals, gaskets as well as any electrical components internal to the drive axle. Also covered are any actuators directly connected to the drive axle. If the dealership determines that it would be one of these parts then it should be covered under the warranty, under normal circumstances. I hope this information helps you.

'07 EXT. Piston slap was addressed by a dealership other than my regular one, as they kept saying noise was normal. This dealer had my truck for over a week, replaced all 8 pistons, honed the cylinder, etc under my 5yr/100K warranty. I replaced left front wheel hub 2 months ago for the same wobble/knocking noise this thread mentions. I knew the hub was in need of replacement when I put my summer 24's on in the spring, but it didn't resolve the noise. Both front shocks leak a bit, so I'm thinking that's what it is. My air leveling compressor no longer works either.
Anyone have suggestions or part #'s for aftermarket shocks and compressor?
Thanks.
