He was so in love with the craft and subject matter of car magazines that he came to inhabit an archetype. He was the dashing, witty, high-spirited, and deeply knowledgeable writer/editor who brought the automobile to life, whose personal flair transferred to whatever he was writing about.

David E. could have written and edited brilliantly on a wide range of topics, from military history to hunting to food to travel to books. But he chose cars, he said, because that’s where the action was. The automobile, in David E.’s formulation, was not only the thing that took you to your next adventure; a great car was an adventure self-contained.

Recently, Davis owned and loved a 2003 Escalade and a 2010 Subaru Forester.

I quess you would have to assume he was rather indecisive! But he liked SUV's!

I always recognized his expertise and experience in the field, and I liked reading his columns in Automobile Magazine. For years I subscribed to both Car and Driver and Motor Trend, but now it's just Car and Driver and Automobile.

While I didn't always agree with his opinions, I certainly appreciated his writing. RIP.

Like most enthusiasts here, I grew up reading everything I could find that was written by Mr. Davis.

He was so much more than a car reviewer ... he was a splendid storyteller.

To me, he was the Hemmingway of auto journalists.

RIP.

Indeed, it was nice having him back at C&D, even for just a short time...

R.I.P.

An icon. Lived a great life on borrowed time. His accident should have killed him.
