i just picked up an '04 V over the weekend, and i notice it ticks for a few mins upon cold start up. i thought this was just normal lsx piston slap, but now i'm reading that the ls6 should not have any piston slap at all. car has 69k miles. It runs good other than a slight misfire at idle (most likely plugs/wires). anyone else have any tick/knocking when cold? (cant use the search feature for this forum from my phone). Thanks

Definitely a bit of valvetrain clatter when cold, but mostly quiets down when it warms up.

It is just normal until the motor heats up and the metal grows some...

this sounds a little louder than normal..my '00 trans am sounded similar but wasnt as loud...but it also had 140k on the bottom end. I'll try to get a vid of the cts-v after work today.

oh, and thanks for the quick replies guys!!

For what it's worth, and from what I've seen, the 04s did not have the anti-piston slap spark table. The 05s did. It seems to work. And the LS6 when it first came out was reported to be a slapper.

mine tick's for about 2-3 minutes upon cold startup, then goes away. I still get it a little even at idle after 50 miles of driving

Ok, I'll bite. I think the oil spraying everywhere and the dangling coils would be a bigger indicator if he didn't have valve covers.

thanks everyone for the replies. i guess i feel a little better about it now.

Do you have valve covers?

no i'm running the open cover mod. more air/oil flow. keeps the engine bay lubed as well.
