: Side air bags saved my life!

without getting into too much detail, i let my friend drive my car and coming off and exit ramp, he lost control and 180'd into a cement pillar holding up the overpass.

i was riding in the passenger seat. the pillar hit me bang on and I think without the side air bags and Gods graces, i would be dead. all that happened to me was a chest contusion and a sore neck... other than that, i feel fine. i got out of the vehicle and walked away on my own power. thank God for the safety features in the V.

Don't know you at all, but glad you're still here... Go home & hug your family & enjoy the rest of your days... The next meal you ate probably never tasted so good & the air you breathed never seemed so sweet!

Good thing the sensor in your passenger seat still works.

Good question....hmmm...does the passenger seat sensor affect the side air bag as well....or just the front facing passenger air bag?

You are one lucky guy.

Depending on how good of a friend he is, you have something on him forever....:yup:

That's one of the reasons the GTO was scratched off of my short list, i knew i wanted side airbags in my next car. Glad you are ok

Glad you're ok dude. I don't think you'll be letting anymore friends drive in the near future but if you are, please make sure they've attended some type of performance driving school.

thanks everyone for your concerns! i still cant believe i made it out with no damage, which is why im not that mad at my friend. on top of that, you dont wanna lose a friend over a car... but he is definitely not gonna be driving my new ride when i get one! he prob watches all those gymkhana videos hahah

Ho. Lee. Crap! Your friend is a goober. If you weren't so far away I'd ask how much for the remains...

Agreed! Thank you that you are okay! By the looks of it, he hit that pillar pretty fast and square on at that.

Let my buddy drive my car and he did a 180 too, didn't hit anything thankfully. That was a heck of an impact you had, wow. Your "without getting into too much detail" and the timing of the post leads me to the question; did St. Patrick's Day have anything to do with this outcome?

a close friend was recently t-boned at a light in his 07 650i, his side airbags didn't go off and he is still feeling the effects of a concussion :(

glad you are ok.

Was thinkin' the exact same thing, but I'm hopin this guy doesn't answer this question here, regardless of whether alcohol was involved or not. Insurance companies troll around these places, yanno...

no drunk driving... this happened on a sunday night. the bay area has been getting beat up with rain. it was just a combination of bad weather and bad driving.

I'm from the bay area as well... Good to know you made it out alright. I know a friend isn't worth losing over a car, but that was a V man.. okay okay. I'd maybe probably still keep my friend, but in the back of my mind.. lol Cadillac's are safe vehicles.

EDIT: maybe I'd more inclined to exercise a continual friendship, if she was hot. lol

Wow someone was definitely watching out for you on that one! Pretty miraculous, glad everyone is okay. I'm sure you're getting inundated by scavengers at this point as always happens here but if you do decide to buy the wreck and part it out I'd definitely be interested in a few things (diff, ds, etc.). With side impact damage like that you could make a ton on parting out, and if I were you I'd have your friend the speed racer doing the tear down for me while I drank beers and cracked the whip. Perfect way to bury the hatchet. Either way best of luck and count your blessings.

Man those pictures were hard to look at. Glad you lived through it, and even better - walked away from it. That's extremely impressive. Hate to think what would have happened if those side bags didn't inflate.

Glad you're OK!

Sides airbags are a huge life saver.

03-23-11, 02:29 PM
wow...... Being in the fire service im not trying to sound rude; but you are VERY lucky any of your airbags in your car went off. I cant recall the countless calls that I have been on where the airbags just don't go off. It's really weird. Even some really grinder ones.

we tend to knock this car for being so heavy ( me included) but it goes to show safety has been built into it.

glad you are ok.

Hope the insurance works out with someone else behind the wheel.
