View Full Version : forum growth AirJigga25 08-11-03, 12:53 PM Hey sal/Moderators,
Cadillacforums.com has more than doubled in members since March am I correct? Up from around 850 to 1,800? This is awesome! BeelzeBob 08-11-03, 01:04 PM Yeah, sorta like Rogaine and hair growth - this forum has certainly grown quite quickly. I do think we'll pass the 3000 mark by the end of the year. I think more people tend to visit forums when the weather ISN'T nice - as opposed to when it is... elwesso 08-11-03, 04:27 PM When Im not golfing or enroute, im here!!!
We are growing faster than any other forum ive seen..... We have probably averaged at least 2-3 new members every day!!! davesdeville 08-11-03, 04:47 PM Yeah, but look at the member list, maybe 20% of them have ever posted, and not very many of them still post. Sorry for raining on the parade. AirJigga25 08-11-03, 04:50 PM Yeah, but look at the member list, maybe 20% of them have ever posted, and not very many of them still post. you mean "pissing in the wheaties" lol what parade. sign me up. Thats very common with any message board, most people prefer to lurk, this is basically the only site i ever post on, but it doesnt mean I dont lurk around ALOT of others the Sandman 08-11-03, 05:52 PM Yeah, but look at the member list, maybe 20% of them have ever posted, and not very many of them still post. Sorry for raining on the parade. The challange is to make our discussions so interesting and fun that they cannot help but join in the dialogue.
Hey Sal, is it possible to integrate a new members "Introductory Post" with the registration process. Once they break the ice with that first post, and we hit 'em with the big welcome, their ours! :D BeelzeBob 08-11-03, 08:33 PM Hey Sal, is it possible to integrate a new members "Introductory Post" with the registration process. Damn. That's a great idea.. You should suggest that over at the vBulletin forums...
Otherwise - yes, it is very common for 90% of the users to lurk and NOT post. In fact, I don't think it's any other way on any other forum.
Oh and I think we're getting between 10 and 20 new signups per day.. Eventually, percentages will come into play and we're going to have a lot of action here... It's inevitable... the Sandman 08-11-03, 08:40 PM Damn. That's a great idea.. You should suggest that over at the vBulletin forums...

It's inevitable...I'd love to take credit but I think I either saw it at the vB.com or vB.org Forums. I'll sniff around and see if I can find out more - it would be kinda cool. elwesso 08-11-03, 10:53 PM I see this over at NICO a lot..... For the most part, there is no need to post, there is about everything you could ask in the previous posts!!
Hopefully (actually, we will) we'll be like that someday!! banstyle 08-11-03, 11:01 PM Yes, the best boards are the ones with lurkers!
That always means that the board has become a very welcome repository of knowledge, and the lurkers can just check it out and read.
I'll admit, I lurk more than post. However, this is the first board I've felt like posting to in over two years, and I assure you, I lurk all over. ;) the Sandman 08-11-03, 11:15 PM Yes, the best boards are the ones with lurkers!

Great avatar! the Sandman 08-11-03, 11:34 PM BTW, did you notice we set a new "Most Users Ever Online" of 64 yesterday? About 12 of the users were search engine spiders - that's a good thing. We have been getting indexed by the major search engines quite a bit lately, which can only add to our popularity and growth. And that still means over 50 members and (human) guests. http://syty.net/phpBB2/images/smiles/2_thumbs_up_-_animated.gif davesdeville 08-12-03, 02:14 AM I used to moderate a differant forum, so yeah I know alot of people lurk around without posting. Many times a person will register and look once or twice, then forget the forum and not return. So it would be foolish to think everyone without a post is lurking. Still, I would be surprised if less than 20% of people who register don't visit a reasonable amount. I don't have experiance with VBulletin, so I don't know if there would be any way (or reason you would want) to check. fabinatl 08-12-03, 08:17 PM But learning a lot. I'm a newbie too. But plan on being around a while.
Cadillac's are fun!:-)
Andy JerseyGirl 08-12-03, 08:21 PM This site is growing tremedously! It's cool! I do see alot of people on, then again alot of people do not post! :(
Either way...I am proud to be a MODERATOR...wooooohooooooooo!!!!!!!!! :bonkers: ;) :D BeelzeBob 08-12-03, 09:21 PM Regardless, all boards have nearly 90% of their members inactive... It's just the way it goes..

That's scary.. We're going to need better hosting soon. Yeah, that's the Evil Monkey from Family Guy. He lives in one of the characters' closet because his wife cheated on him, and he turned evil. I love that site- some people have come up with HILARIOUS movies (inc. your Wes movie from the other thread.. GOOD WORK!) the Sandman 09-17-03, 03:52 PM Well, we just had 62 users currently online. That's less than our record of 97, *but* now that the cookie timeout has been cut down to 15 minutes (it was 30 minutes when we hit 97) I think that we can consider this our busiest yet. BeelzeBob 09-17-03, 04:12 PM Wow! I think you're right.. It probably would have shown 120 people on at once... the Sandman 09-17-03, 05:05 PM Wow! I think you're right.. Think we'll have over 3,000 members by our first birthday? elwesso 09-17-03, 05:38 PM Yes!!! I think we will..... the Sandman 10-16-03, 07:45 PM We just hit 67! Are we cool or what?
Think we'll have over 3,000 members by our first birthday?Don't look now, but:
Who's Online: 13 Members and 84 Guests. Most users ever online was 99, October 16th, 2003 at 07:37 PM.
And that's with the reduced cookie timeout!!!
Think we'll hit 4,000 members by our first birthday? BeelzeBob 10-16-03, 10:51 PM Hehe. I wonder if we can have 5000 members by our first birthday. :D the Sandman 10-27-03, 10:46 PM Another milestone - we just hit 4,000 members.
:D carolinasts 10-27-03, 11:10 PM I am also a new member having joined several weeks ago. I have enjoyed this site very much. When I bought the STS,..I knew I needed a home for info and talk. I would like to see members get together in areas. I know a bunch went to Englishtown NJ recently,.a little too far to drive from SC. But a Charlotte NC or an Atlanta GA is close enough to get me to drive to it. A list of our members by state would help trying to get a little informal meet and greet to happen. I love the site and check it daily since joining,..and I ll try to post more instead of lurking. :bouncy: BeelzeBob 10-27-03, 11:10 PM Outstanding! All within our first year online.. I wonder if we can get another 1000 in 60 days or so... I think we could hit 6000 members by then... BeelzeBob 10-27-03, 11:11 PM Hi CarolinaSTS. :) Yes, we'll be getting localized meetings here shortly. We've already started a little bit and this will continue as time goes on. Once we sorta find a 'representative' for each area, it'll be really easy. :) carolinasts 10-27-03, 11:18 PM Well,..Sal,..me being a certified redneck from the south who recently got "cultured by buying an STS,.I would be glad to help in some manner when it comes to the southern region. Let me know,..I am VP of Southern Scouts which is a 7 state club devoted to old International Harvesters picks-ups and suv's. I look forward to a mid south meet of caddy owners,..Ill be there. :D This may sound like a criminal idea, but....
Maybe we should put some kind of a cap on the membership amount. Seriously. Won't oversaturation hurt us? Isn't that why GM forums died? Too many people were posting bullshit posts?
P.S. I know nothing about hosting or moderating forums, so I could easily be wrong, but this is just mine, yes, uneducated, but still, a concern. When I looked through the membership list, I saw a very high percentage of people who joined but left a long time ago. Some never even posted.
A lot of them are like me, considering a purchase, but maybe they decided to buy something else instead, so they never came back. The odds are that even since December 30th, a couple may have even died. If there's a way to purge the list, that might be a good idea.
It's probably hard to put a cap on membership, since you never know how many are going to hit the server at the same time. That's the number to watch.
Growing pains are common, and we're about to experience more as winter is upon us. That's when people are stuck at home more and get really active on the web.
The moderators have to keep the BS at a minimum, and keep the topics fresh. the Sandman 11-11-03, 10:43 PM Most users ever online was 129, November 11th, 2003 at 09:14 PM

I'm working on getting everything working so it wont be long before we're on the new server.. If everything works out okay, we should be up and running by the weekend - and MUCH, MUCH faster... elwesso 11-12-03, 03:41 PM Golden...... :D

I've posted a fair amount (mostly welcomes). I have found that the answers I have recieved to my questions have been accurate. It is nice to be able to cruise around the forum picking up useful tidbits of information here and there. I am not a DIY'er (mechanically) but I do love to shine my caddy! Other forums have a rule. If a member doesn't post for a fixed period of time, he is banned. I know that this is somewhat hijacking a thread, but I suggest (and I know I am in the wrong section to do that) that we make a rule for anyone not posting for one year (more then fair interval) to be removed from the board. I guess that kinda makes sense cause there are quite a few people who sign up post thier question and then leave. | |
